Creator Of Netflix’s 97% Sci-Fi Series Hopes For A Twin Peaks-Style Return For Season 3

It’s been over three years since new episodes of Russian Doll were released, but Natasha Lyonne knows where she’d like to take the story if Netflix renews the show. Created with Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler, Russian Doll follows Nadia Vulvokov, played by Lyonne, a software engineer who finds herself stuck in a time loop, repeatedly dying and reliving her birthday.

Natasha Lyonne recently shared with The Hollywood Reporter her vision for a potential third season of Russian Doll. She wants to take a similar approach to David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, specifically referencing Fire Walk with Me and Twin Peaks: The Return as a blueprint. She’s committed to structuring the season in that same non-linear and enigmatic style.

Natasha Lyonne, the creative force behind Russian Doll – she co-created, executive produced, wrote, directed, and starred in it – hasn’t decided when she’ll talk to Netflix about making more episodes, but she says it’s definitely happening. She described it as ‘in process.’

Before starting on season three of Russian Doll, Natasha Lyonne has a few other projects she needs to finish. She’s also working on writing a memoir, and playfully questions whether she’ll be able to publish such a personal account.

I’m really excited about the possibility of a Russian Doll return, and Natasha Lyonne has said it could happen anytime – maybe in a couple of years, or even decades down the line! She’s incredibly busy with other projects, but she’s also joked about wanting to upload her mind to the cloud, as long as she keeps her own thoughts and doesn’t become part of a collective consciousness. It’s a funny idea, but it shows how much she values her individuality even while exploring these big, complex themes.

I’ve really set my sights on approaching my next big project the way David Lynch does – starting with something like ‘Fire Walk With Me’ and then expanding into a longer, more complex series like ‘Twin Peaks: The Return’. That’s definitely the plan. I’m working on getting it to Netflix, but it’s a juggling act with all my other writing commitments – I’ve got a ton of drafts I need to finish, and eventually, a memoir to write too. It’s all there on my computer, ready to go in Final Draft. I’ll need to pitch it, of course, and hope they’re on board with my vision. Honestly, I have no idea when it will actually happen – it could be two years, ten, twenty, or even longer. My ideal scenario? Being able to upload my consciousness to the cloud while still maintaining my individuality – you know I’ve been pretty open about wanting to be a brain in a jar for a while now!

She’s aiming to create something similar to David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, a show that originally ran for two seasons on ABC in the early 1990s before being cancelled. Lynch later made a prequel film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, in 1992, but it wasn’t successful in theaters, earning only $4.2 million in North America despite costing between $10 and $12 million to make.

As a huge Twin Peaks fan, I was absolutely thrilled when, after 25 years, David Lynch started quietly working on bringing it back. It was amazing to finally see Twin Peaks: The Return on Showtime, and everyone – critics and viewers like me – loved it. It was heartbreaking to learn that Lynch actually had ideas for a fourth season, but sadly, he passed away in early 2025 at the age of 78 before he could bring them to life.

Natasha Lyonne imagines a significant time jump between the second and third seasons of Russian Doll, but probably not as long as the decades-long wait for the Twin Peaks revival. She specifically referenced Fire Walk with Me, suggesting she’s also interested in the possibility of making a Russian Doll film.

Critics generally liked both Twin Peaks and Russian Doll, but Russian Doll earned a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes (97%) – higher than the 78% achieved by Twin Peaks.

The show Russian Doll has received award nominations, including Emmys recognizing its excellent cinematography, costumes, and production design.

Lyonne plans to revisit Russian Doll eventually. However, whether the show continues depends on Netflix approving her ideas for its future.
