A couple whose home was burglarized and car stolen were stunned to learn they were being charged a $6,000 fine. The reason? One of the car thieves wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.
Leila and Hamid, a couple from Australia’s Gold Coast, were awakened when masked burglars broke into their house and stole items, including their Lexus SUV.
Reports say the burglars already had a car key and tried to get into the couple’s bedroom to steal more items.
Hamid said the thieves already had the key to Leila’s car when they attempted to break into the bedroom for the keys to the other vehicles.
Family fined $6K after home invaders steal car
According to the homeowner, the burglars stole a mix of things like a vacuum cleaner, a gym bag, and some shoes before running off. He woke up to the commotion, ran them out of the house, and then called the police. However, he says the police never showed up, and the group came back a short time later.
That’s when they took the Lexus and fled.
Hamid explained he contacted the police again, but they still haven’t visited his home after three weeks.
The couple was surprised to receive a $6,258 AUD fine from transport authorities. A traffic camera had recorded the stolen SUV they were driving, and the driver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.
The infringement is reportedly due by March 3, with the threat of additional fees if unpaid.
Hamid said it had been around three weeks and the police hadn’t yet come. He also mentioned they’d received a notice that the suspect wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

The family has been deeply affected by the experience, especially their seven-year-old daughter, who witnessed the thieves stealing the car. Her parents have already taken her to a psychologist twice, hoping to prevent any long-term emotional harm.
Meanwhile, the suspects remain at large.
Hamid pointed out that there are cameras everywhere on Gold Coast highways. He questioned why these cameras can issue fines for traffic violations, but seemingly can’t record license plates and help catch car thieves.
Authorities have yet to publicly comment on whether the fine will be waived.
