‘Coraline’ Musical Canceled After Neil Gaiman Sexual Assault Allegations

The U.K. staging of Neil Gaiman‘s “Coraline” has been called off due to accusations of sexual misconduct towards the writer.

The “Coraline” musical was initially scheduled for performance at the Leeds Playhouse from April 11 to May 11, following which it planned to move on to venues in Edinburgh, Birmingham, and Manchester.

The collaboration partners Leeds Playhouse, Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh, Birmingham Rep, and Home Manchester made a collective announcement on Wednesday, stating that they will no longer move forward with their production of “Coraline – A Musical.” After thorough deliberation, they believe it is not feasible to continue given the accusations against the piece’s original writer.

In July 2024, I was part of a group that brought to light disturbing accusations against Neil Gaiman, through our platform Tortoise Media. We released a six-part podcast titled “Master,” which delved into the accounts of five women who had experienced inappropriate behavior by the author renowned for his works like “Coraline” and “Sandman.” Following this, New York Magazine further magnified the issue with an article entitled “There Is No Safe Word,” where their reporter Lila Shapiro spoke to eight women who shared harrowingly similar stories. Four of these women had previously shared their experiences on our podcast.

In a heartfelt statement, Neil Gaiman acknowledges his past mistakes in navigating personal relationships. He admits to being emotionally distant yet sexually accessible, self-centered, and not always considerate as he should have been. However, he vigorously denies any accusations of sexual misconduct, emphasizing that he stands firm against false descriptions and will never admit to actions he did not commit.

Following Tortoise’s report, several of Neil Gaiman’s projects have been impacted. The third season of “Good Omens” on Amazon Prime Video will now consist of a single 90-minute episode, with Gaiman no longer involved in the production. Production on Disney’s movie adaptation of “The Graveyard Book” has been halted, and Netflix canceled “Dead Boy Detectives,” though it’s uncertain if this was due to the allegations. “The Sandman” Season 2 is still anticipated for release this year on Netflix. Recently, Dark Horse Comics ended their collaboration with Gaiman and canceled the “Anansi Boys” comic series.
