Controversy erupts at NCAA hockey game as lights go out during away team’s OT breakaway

A hockey team in Massachusetts narrowly avoided losing a game when a power outage stopped their opponents from scoring the winning goal during overtime.

College sports are incredibly competitive, and the rivalries between teams are a huge deal for everyone involved – the athletes, coaches, and fans alike.

Losing always stings, but Connecticut’s recent loss was particularly difficult to accept.

Hockey team robbed of winning moment by electrical issue

The UConn and UMass basketball game was tied 3-3 at the end of regulation and went into overtime this weekend.

We were all on the edge of our seats as UConn started to pull ahead, driving towards the goal, when suddenly the lights at the Mullins Center began to flicker. Then, everything just went black – the whole arena was plunged into darkness! It was so unexpected.

You won’t believe what happened during this overtime! As UConn was about to score, the lights suddenly flickered and then went completely out! 💡❌ UMass ended up winning the game in a shootout. 😵‍💫 (Via @NCAAIceHockey)

Once the power was restored, UConn had already lost their chance to get ahead, and it was too late to change anything.

After the power problem was fixed, the game continued, and unfortunately for everyone else, UMASS won in a shootout.

UCONN was close to winning a championship, but they’ve lost another game this season. This loss, however, is particularly painful.

It’s been a tough season for both teams

Sporting arenas experienced some electrical issues this weekend, including a sudden, loud air horn going off during the Pistons-Cavs NBA game.

Both UCONN and UMASS have struggled this season. They are currently near the bottom of the NCAA hockey standings, and even a win this weekend wasn’t enough for UMASS to move above 20th place.

Okay, so both teams are really hoping to turn things around and start playing better in the Conference championships, and then hopefully make a good run in the regionals. As a UConn fan, I’m a little worried about this recent loss – I really hope it’s not a sign of bad luck to come!
