It’s been six years since director Terrence Malick last released a film, following 2019’s A Hidden Life. Malick is famous for movies like The Tree of Life and Knight of Cups, so any new project he works on generates a lot of excitement. However, a recent report suggests his latest film, The Way of the Wind, might never be released. Surprisingly, the film is already completed, but is being held up due to issues in post-production.
According to an article in The Telegraph, Terrence Malick’s film The Way of the Wind may never be released. Filmed in 2019 under the title The Last Planet, the movie tells the story of Jesus Christ with a large cast. Like Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ, Malick’s film offers a unique take on the biblical narrative. Starring Géza Röhrig as Jesus, Mark Rylance as Satan, and Matthias Schoenaerts as Peter, those involved describe The Way of the Wind as an unconventional portrayal of Christ.
Although some might expect religious controversy to be holding up the release of The Way of the Wind, the biggest delay is actually due to editing. Reports indicate over 3,000 hours of footage were filmed, leaving a massive amount of work to create a final, polished version of the movie. Director Terrence Malick himself has stated the film is far from complete.
‘The Way of the Wind’ Could End Up Being a Victim of Terrence Malick’s Perfectionism

Terrence Malick’s new film, The Way of the Wind, is taking some surprising creative risks. According to reports, Jesus won’t perform miracles in the movie, and there are even scenes depicting him using cannabis. The film also includes a lengthy, 28-minute monologue delivered by Andrew Rylance as Satan, suggesting Malick is focusing on the story’s philosophical themes – a natural direction for a filmmaker known for his deeply thoughtful and meditative work, which he approaches with careful consideration.
Terrence Malick is known for being a perfectionist, and this may be why his film, The Way of the Wind, has been delayed for so long. The extensive editing process could ultimately lead to the film being abandoned altogether. While a strong creative vision often results in amazing art, Malick needs to become satisfied with the story to prevent The Way of the Wind from becoming a lost cinematic masterpiece. It remains to be seen if he can finish the film.
