Constantine 2 Looks Closer Than Ever Thanks To James Gunn’s Latest DCU Comments

James Gunn recently shared encouraging news about Constantine 2, suggesting the film is getting closer to release and will be a great addition to DC’s collection of movies. Although DC is currently focused on building a main DC Universe timeline, other projects like The Batman 2 are still being developed outside of that core continuity.

Like the first Constantine film, the sequel takes place in an alternate reality. However, the project has faced a lot of uncertainty regarding its development and whether it would actually happen. Recent news is encouraging for fans who have been hoping for a continuation of the story.

James Gunn’s Latest Update About Constantine 2 Means The Movie Is Just One Solid Script Away From Success

James Gunn recently spoke with BobaTalks in October 2025 about the future of the DC Universe, including its separate ‘Elseworlds’ projects. The conversation naturally turned to Constantine 2, which is one of the most anticipated films in that series.

Before work on the film stopped, Keanu Reeves mentioned in a February 2025 interview with Inverse that the team had presented a concept to DC Studios, who gave a preliminary ‘yes,’ allowing them to begin working on a script. James Gunn then provided an update on the project’s status as of that time, explaining:

I talked it over with Keanu, and I definitely think it’s a fantastic group of people. I really like them all, and I believe they’re very talented. However, I haven’t seen the script yet.

Considering the script is likely being reviewed by James Gunn or someone at DC Studios, and given Gunn’s positive comments about the people working on it – hinting he’d approve the story if the script is good – it appears a Constantine 2 movie is becoming increasingly likely.

Why Constantine 2 Has Been In Development For So Long

The 2005 film Constantine developed a dedicated fanbase after it came out, but it didn’t achieve the same mainstream success as other DC movies starring more well-known characters. This likely contributed to the long delay in getting a sequel made.

As a fan, it’s been a long wait, but it makes sense to me. DC’s movie world has changed so much since the mid-2000s, and with everything shifting from the old DCEU to the new DCU, it felt like Constantine 2 might have gotten pushed to the back burner. It’s understandable that it’s taken years to get this project going with all that change happening.

Considering everything that affected the project – like the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 writers’ strike – the long wait for Constantine 2, over two decades after the first film, is understandable. It also makes the possibility of Keanu Reeves returning as John Constantine even more anticipated.
