Concord’s story serves as a warning for developers of games that are constantly updated. Despite years of work and a multi-million dollar investment, the game launched poorly and was quickly canceled by Sony. Fortunately, a dedicated group of three fans stepped up and managed to revive the game on their own server.
Thanks to the efforts of a dedicated team – including a user named Red who reverse engineered parts of the game, open_wizard who rebuilt the backend, and programmer gwog – Concord is starting to come back online. They’ve released a couple of gameplay videos to show off their progress, though they admit the game still has some bugs.
The team successfully tested the game by starting a match, choosing characters, and playing it through to the end.
Red reported that the project is still in development, currently playable but with some bugs. They plan to start private playtesting as soon as the servers are completely configured.
I was really excited when Concord came out in 2024, but it was a bit of a surprise that it only had around 25,000 players at launch. Then, things got worse when Sony actually closed down Firewalk Studios, the team behind it. It was tough to see, but Sony did talk about what went wrong and said they’d learned a lot from the experience. Apparently, Hermen Hulst, a big boss at Sony, said a big part of the problem was that they didn’t keep a close enough eye on the game’s development.
The situation with Concord came up during a discussion in the British Parliament about protecting video games. While lawmakers talked about a campaign called “Stop Killing Games,” they didn’t believe new laws were needed to prevent games from disappearing online.
