Nearly nine years have passed since the launch of the popular farming simulation game, Stardew Valley, and it remains a critically-acclaimed title with ongoing releases on various platforms and regular updates featuring new content. Though the game’s developers are regularly making improvements through QoL updates, adjustments, and optimizations, the future of Stardew Valley has been somewhat unclear – until now.
In a chat with NPR, published on January 24th, 2025, the designer of Stardew Valley, Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, shared insights about the game’s creation, its triumph, his bond with the gaming community, and even hinted at what’s to come for Stardew Valley, despite being engrossed in his new project, Haunted Chocolatier. He also explained that ongoing support for Stardew Valley would persist well into the future.
The upcoming project from ConcernedApe, known as Haunted Chocolatier, was initially unveiled in October 2021. At that point, the creator had already spent a decade crafting Stardew Valley. Post its release, Stardew Valley consistently received updates to improve its quality, gameplay adjustments, and optimizations. These enhancements led to the addition of new content, expanded platform availability, and ultimately, the game’s launch on mobile devices in 2021, followed by console releases in November 2024.
We’re celebrating the eighth year anniversary of Stardew Valley, and we can’t thank you enough for your continued support throughout these years! I’m thrilled to share that the PC release date for the 1.6 update is set for March 19th. Rest assured, console and mobile versions will be released as soon as they are ready.

During an NPR interview, ConcernedApe, the creator of Stardew Valley, was asked if he ever saw a time when he would consider the game as finished or complete. Despite having worked on Stardew Valley for more than 12 years, he expressed a desire for the game to continue improving and reach its full potential rather than being overloaded with content.
If the game starts to feel overloaded with too much content, potentially harming its enjoyment, I’d stop there for now,” said ConcernedApe, clarifying his intentions. Although he doesn’t rule out the possibility entirely, he emphasized that he wouldn’t definitively close the door on adding more to the game in the future as he aims to create multiple games throughout his career. He even hinted that he might still be tweaking and expanding the game, perhaps even 50 years down the line.
He ended his thoughts about Stardew Valley’s future, mentioning that he enjoys “making things” and doesn’t envision himself “stopping work anytime soon.” He joked about potentially launching an update when he’s around 90 years old, if he lives that long, which we all hope is true!
