Companion

On Monday evening, Harvey Guillén graced the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of his latest horror thriller, “Companion.” The actor expressed joy to be back on set following a brief hiatus due to the LA wildfires. Guillén resides in Altadena, and although his home escaped destruction, it sustained some damage from the fires.

During periods of confusion, grief, and gloom, it’s essential for us to generate amusement as a means of finding solace,” the actor from “What We Do in the Shadows” shared with me.

He managed to explore the local area a few days back. “There was a mural on the side of an old, historic building,” Guillén mentioned. “Unfortunately, the building itself had been destroyed, but there was a brick sign on the wall that read ‘Altadena.’…It was quite poetic. It was a reflection of the city – yes, it’s faced difficulties, but it remains resilient.

I myself attribute the preservation of my home during the evacuation to prayer and advice from a neighbor at the last moment. “On that fateful night,” I remember thinking, “I implored my ancestors for protection, ‘Please safeguard my house, please safeguard my house.’ Additionally, my elderly neighbor suggested I wet down the house before departing. So, I drenched the house with water and set up sprinklers on the roof. I activated the sprinklers and left them running.

Around 4 a.m., Guillén’s video doorbell camera activated, capturing a scene where it seemed like rain was fire. “The palm trees burst into flames,” he described, “they appeared to be dropping from the heavens. Flaming spheres were landing on my lawn, only to dissolve swiftly because of the numerous puddles everywhere. I can’t explain why, but somehow the universe managed to protect my home.

He confessed to experiencing a sense of survivor’s remorse upon witnessing the devastating loss of many of his neighbors. “I found myself sinking into a state of deep sadness, as I had never before encountered such a situation where my community was grieving,” he explained.

Even so, he said he’s having fun promoting “Companion: “It’s such a fun movie.”

The Warner Bros. movie, penned and helmed by Drew Hancock, chronicles a group of friends who encounter unexpected trouble during their vacation at a secluded cabin in the woods. Trouble starts brewing when one of the guests (Jack Quaid) unintentionally causes chaos with his robot companion (Sophie Thatcher). The ensemble includes Guillén and Lukas Gage as couples, while Megan Suri and Rupert Friend complete the cast.

Guillén commented on having to repeat the lip-locking scene multiple times with Gage, jokingly adding, “I’m currently seeking counseling because of it.

He mentioned, “It’s amusing since we were both involved in relationships while shooting it. So deeply in love, we infused our affection into these characters, a feeling that is now immortalized on the screen.

“Companion” is in theaters on Friday, Jan. 31.
