In the legal dispute between comedians, it was determined that Harry Deansway failed to prove his sitcom idea was stolen by Steve Coogan’s production company, Baby Cow.
In London’s High Court, it was decided by a judge that the Baby Cow series “Live at the Moth Club,” which aired for a single season on UKTV in 2022, is not considered a duplicate of Deansway’s 2013 YouTube series “Shambles.
A two-day trial took place in November 2024, during which comedians such as Ellie White from “The Windsors,” and Alexander Owen and Ben Ashenden from “Jurassic World Dominion,” who had also appeared together in “Live at the Moth Club,” provided testimonies on behalf of Baby Cow. The three claimed that any similarities between their two shows, which combined stand-up comedy with sitcom elements, were purely coincidental.
High Court Recorder Amanda Michaels ultimately agreed with that assessment.
In this situation, Deanway, using his real name Joshua Rinkoff, asserted that Rupert Majendie, the head of comedy at Baby Cow, had plagiarized a television show. Majendie and Baby Cow firmly denied these accusations, as they were leveled against someone with whom Rinkoff had both personal and professional ties throughout their careers in comedy.
Coogan wasn’t mentioned in the lawsuit, and it’s important to note that there’s no indication he played any role in “Live at the Moth Club.
According to Michaels’ ruling, she determined that Mr. Rinkoff’s series format was not considered a protected work under copyright law. Even if there had been copyright protection, she would still have concluded that Baby Cow did not violate it.
In the year 1998, Coogan teamed up with producer Henry Normal to establish Baby Cow Productions. Later, they sold the major chunk of ownership to BBC Studios. However, Coogan still maintains a small portion of shares and serves as the creative director. The daily operations are managed by Sarah Monteith, who serves as CEO at Baby Cow Productions.
