Colman Domingo Met Marvel About Rumors of Replacing Jonathan Majors as Kang: ‘I Want a Role to Be Mine. Something Didn’t Feel Right About Replacing Someone’

On the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, I shared that I had a conversation with Marvel execs regarding the buzz swirling around my potential role as Kang the Conqueror, shouldering Jonathan Majors‘ mantle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The primary antagonist, initially designed to be similar to Thanos in the MCU, was set to be played by Majors and first appeared as Kang in the 2023 movie “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” Marvel had a substantial plotline planned for this villain, which was expected to unfold in the 2026 film “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.” However, Majors was dismissed by Marvel in December 2023 following his conviction for assaulting his ex-partner. Before Marvel officially announced that it would abandon Kang and bring back Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, speculation arose online suggesting that Domingo might step in to replace Majors, preserving the Kang narrative.

When it kept popping up in the news and on Twitter, I found myself questioning, ‘Could this be real? Am I being discussed due to Kang?’ Domingo shared with Josh Horowitz on ‘Happy Sad Confused.’ He even reached out to his team, asking, ‘Are we having secret discussions that I’m unaware of?’ To which they replied, ‘No, nothing like that.’ They also assured him, ‘We aren’t being evasive or hiding something.’

The actor mentioned that there were discussions about him joining Marvel in some capacity, so they had a formal meeting with Marvel’s leaders to discuss this possibility. He confirmed that he indeed attended this meeting. During their conversation, they discussed the current state of Marvel and the rumors surrounding Kang. The actor expressed his preference for taking on roles that align with his energy and make sense, rather than replacing someone else. Instead, he wants to create something new and unique, starting from scratch, rather than inheriting an existing role.

On Domingo’s part, it was never a topic he discussed regarding the Kang rumors. He further clarified, “I aim to construct something entirely new, and as such, discussions about potential projects continue.

Marvel chose not to replace Kang and instead revised their storyline, introducing Doctor Doom as a new villain resembling Thanos for the Avengers to confront. Shortly after it was announced that Downey would portray Doom, Majors expressed his sadness about this decision to TMZ.
