Colleen Hoover wrote It Ends With Us to explore her mother’s difficult relationship with her abusive father. However, the recent public dispute between actors Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively surrounding the movie adaptation has been surprisingly more upsetting for both Hoover and her mother. Hoover told Elle that thinking about the fallout from the film is now causing them both trauma. She feels terrible that her mother seems to be experiencing more pain from the movie’s controversy than she did during her childhood with her father, simply because of how unpleasant the situation has become.
If you haven’t been following the legal drama surrounding the book It Ends With Us, consider yourself lucky! Colleen Hoover’s lawsuit alleging harassment and retaliation against her co-star and his production company is scheduled to go to trial in March. However, the countersuits filed by the defendant claiming defamation – including one against The New York Times – have already been thrown out. The situation has become quite widespread, even involving Rainn Wilson and nearly requiring a deposition from Taylor Swift. When Elle magazine interviewed Hoover, she was preparing for her own deposition. She described the whole thing as a “circus” and explained she’s trying to stay out of the negativity. Hoover hinted she has her own side of the story, but doesn’t want to contribute to the drama by speaking out or putting others down, preferring to ignore the situation and let people form their own opinions.
Honestly, it’s a little painful for me to talk about my breakthrough book now. I’ve gotten to the point where I almost don’t want to mention I wrote it, especially with everything that happened with the lawsuit – it feels like that’s all anyone remembers. When someone asks what I do, I just say ‘I’m a writer’ and quickly change the subject! It definitely made me want to be much more hands-on with turning my books into movies going forward. I’m really involved with the upcoming adaptations of Verity (coming in fall 2026) and Reminders of Him (March 2026), and I was thrilled to see Regretting You, starring Mason Thames, do so well – it’s been in the top five at the box office for four weeks now!
