Cobra Kai finale features the perfect Back to the Future joke

Today marked the conclusion of Cobra Kai, wrapping up plotlines initiated in 1984 while neatly addressing any remaining uncertainties, and even slipping in an outstanding Back to the Future reference.

1984 saw the release of The Karate Kid, a film that became incredibly popular, paving the way for multiple sequels, a remake, and even a Netflix series titled Cobra Kai. This six-season show has continued the longstanding feud between characters Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence.

The classic film “Back to the Future” premiered in 1985 and was incredibly popular, resulting in two sequels in ’89 and ’90. Despite the time-travel storyline offering potential for additional installments, its creators, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, have ruled out any more “Back to the Future” series or movies.

However, the mischievous creators of Cobra Kai, Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz, inserted a clever wink to Back to the Future in the series finale, hinting at possible future developments for the franchise.

Cobra Kai guys want to tackle Back to the Future next

In the closing scene of Cobra Kai, Daniel and Johnny are seen talking in a restaurant. However, just as the camera moves towards them, it briefly focuses on two individuals engaged in a heated conversation instead.

Attentive spectators will spot Cobra Kai’s executive producers and directors, Heald and Hurwitz, in this exchange:

Reply: “The series will take place in Hill Valley during an alternate 1985. With Wilson, Thomson, and Zane on board, we’ve received approval to proceed.

Me: “Billy’s more than just a friend; he created a stunning art piece for my entrance hall. It’s clear as day that I want him involved in the project. Why stop there? Let’s bring Crispin into the mix too! And since we’re aiming big, how about Mike taking the director’s chair? Let’s amplify this project to its full potential!

Jon: “This is going to be amazing.”

In simpler terms, if you’re not familiar with all these names, Hill Valley is the fictional town where the movie Back to the Future takes place. Thomas F. Wilson portrayed Biff, Leah Thompson was Lorraine, Billy Zane was a member of Biff’s gang, and Crispin Glover played George. Lastly, Michael J. Fox starred as Marty in this film.

It seems reasonable to infer that since they’ve concluded work on The Karate Kid series, Heald and Hurwitz plan to adapt the Back to the Future universe in a similar manner as they did with Cobra Kai.

However, it’s clearly a jest, as evidenced by Bob Gale’s words from last week’s Saturn Awards: “People ask us ‘When will you make Back to the Future 4?’ and I say, ‘You’re kidding, right?’ It’s like telling me ‘When are you going to clean your garage?'” You can quote me on that.
