A strange omission from the start of the new Ultimate Universe was the character Clint Barton. The first issue of The Ultimates hinted he’d declined to become Hawkeye. He eventually showed up in Ultimate Hawkeye #1, but was quickly killed. Surprisingly, his death has created more confusion than answers.
Ultimate Hawkeye #1, created by B. Earl and Taboo with art by Michael Sta. Maria, introduces Charli Ramsey. Ramsey, a Native American activist who dislikes the Roxxon corporation, finds a Hawkeye costume and trick arrows that appear to have been left behind by Clint Barton. Despite this, he earns his place with the Ultimates by demonstrating his skills and value.
Ramsey goes undercover at a high-society orgy, intending to photograph evidence of wrongdoing by powerful people. His disguise doesn’t last long, but instead of being killed, he’s subjected to a brutal series of challenges for the entertainment of the wealthy attendees – overseen by the new Hawkeye.
The final test of Ramsey’s abilities pits him against a masked fighter named Ronin in a deadly battle. To raise the stakes even higher, both fighters are told their families will be killed if they lose or don’t fight. Ramsey wins by disabling Ronin with a flare arrow, avoiding a fatal blow. This reveals that Ronin is actually a new version of Clint Barton from another universe.
How does Clint Barton die in Ultimate Hawkeye?
Even though his family was in danger, Charlie Ramsey wouldn’t kill Clint Barton. Frustrated, the villain in charge of the party’s entertainment, Exterminatrix, decided to kill Barton herself. She used her special Midas Bullets, which instantly turn anything they hit into solid gold, effectively killing Barton and turning him into a golden statue.
Surprisingly, Charli Ramsey is released even though he wouldn’t harm anyone for his captors’ entertainment. He’s then given the opportunity to become the new Ronin, essentially Roxxon’s top enforcer. The story concludes with Charli deciding to check on his family and make sure they’re safe, but the fate of Clint Barton’s family remains unknown.
Clint Barton’s story in the new Ultimate Universe feels surprisingly uneventful. The comics don’t explain why he didn’t become Hawkeye, or how he ended up as Ronin, which is a letdown considering the potential for a compelling narrative. It’s interesting to see this version of Hawkeye with a family – a contrast to the single, childless Hawkeye in the primary Marvel Universe – but that potential isn’t fully explored.
Ultimate Hawkeye #1 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
