As a long-time comic book enthusiast and movie aficionado who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous superhero franchises, I must say that this news about the upcoming Clayface feature film excites me to no end! The fact that Mike Flanagan, a talented director known for his work on “Doctor Sleep” and “The Exorcist,” is at the helm of this project promises a unique take on the character.
Following the triumph of the HBO show “The Penguin,” DC Studios has given the go-ahead for a movie focusing on Clayface, the versatile Batman adversary, based on a screenplay penned by Mike Flanagan, who’s known for “Doctor Sleep.” While specifics about the storyline remain limited, filming is anticipated to start in the early part of next year.
As a devoted cinephile, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the Clayface project that I initially proposed to DC Studios back in 2023. In a tweet from 2021, I expressed my excitement about creating a standalone film for Clayface, envisioning it as a chilling blend of horror, thriller, and tragedy. However, with my current commitments – penning and directing a fresh take on “The Exorcist” for Universal under Blumhouse and Morgan Creek, and developing an Amazon MGM Studios series based on Stephen King’s novel “Carrie” – it seems that DC is now on the hunt for a director to helm this project. An announcement about who will be taking charge is expected soon.
A representative for DC Studios had no comment.
Originating back in 1940 as one of Batman’s initial adversaries, Clayface has undergone multiple transformations. Initially depicted as a disreputable actor resorted to crime while donning a clay-like mask based on a character he previously portrayed, the character’s ability to morph shapes was first unveiled in 1961. Since then, Clayface has appeared in various live-action and animated adaptations of “Batman,” such as Ron Perlman’s portrayal on “Batman: The Animated Series” in the ’90s, Brian McManamon’s representation on the 2010s Fox series “Gotham,” and more recently, Alan Tudyk’s performance on the adult animated comedy “Harley Quinn.
The approval of the project is a clear indication that James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-heads of DC Studios, plan to incorporate a diverse range of narrative styles within their studio. As Gunn explained to EbMaster during a conversation about his animated series “Creature Commandos”, which marks the beginning of the new DC Universe, “I aim to demonstrate that anything is possible at DC Studios.” This means we can create content suitable for all ages, like ‘Superman’, as well as mature themes involving violence and sexuality. Essentially, they want to establish a universe where they can explore various genres and tell stories about different types of characters.
