As a child of the ’90s, I vividly remember the thrill of playing Screamer on my trusty old PC, its arcade-style gameplay and demanding system requirements pushing my machine to its limits. So you can imagine my excitement when I heard that Milestone is bringing back this classic franchise with a darker, anime-inspired twist! The collaboration with Polygon Pictures and the involvement of Troy Baker only sweetens the deal.
At The Game Awards, developer Milestone unveiled its latest venture – a reincarnation of the iconic arcade racer, Screamer. Though the trailer didn’t reveal any gameplay footage, it hinted at a grittier direction for the series, set in a metropolis bathed in neon lights reminiscent of classic anime. Milestone intends to merge the original arcade driving experience of Screamer with a rich narrative featuring various character narratives. The game is slated for release in 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
“Screamer takes its influence from ’80s and ’90s anime and manga. Milestone has teamed up with Polygon Pictures, a renowned Japanese animation studio, to elevate the game’s storyline and visual style through animated sequences.
As reported by Milestone, Troy Baker – the voice actor for The Last of Us – is also participating in the project. He gives life to a crucial character within the game. The narrative explores significant themes such as human determination, vengeance, affection, and avarice, with a touch of traditional science fiction elements.
1995 saw the debut of the original Screamer game, which stood out for its arcade-like gameplay and high system demands. In quick succession, three more games were launched: Screamer 2, Screamer Rally, and Screamer 4×4, all developed by Milestone. If you didn’t own a PlayStation with Ridge Racer or a Sega Saturn with Daytona USA, this PC game was the ideal alternative at that time.
