The classic Final Fantasy games originally released on the NES and SNES are still incredibly popular today. Square Enix announced that the remastered versions, known as the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series, have now sold over 6 million copies worldwide.
The official Final Fantasy X account recently announced that the Pixel Remaster series has reached a major sales milestone, expressing gratitude to fans for their support. Originally released in 2021, these retro RPGs initially received some criticism for their font choices. The series includes updated versions of the first six Final Fantasy games—from the original Final Fantasy on NES (1987) to Final Fantasy VI on SNES (1994)—with new features like auto-battle and updated user interfaces.

The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series became available on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2023, and on Xbox Series X|S in 2024. As of March 2025, the entire Final Fantasy series has sold over 200 million copies worldwide. Square Enix also reported that the Pixel Remaster series itself had sold 5 million copies at that time, indicating an additional million units were sold in the nine months prior.
Recent Final Fantasy games have shifted away from the traditional turn-based battles seen in older games like those in the Pixel Remaster series. For example, Final Fantasy XVI completely abandoned turn-based combat, opting for a faster, more action-packed style to attract a new generation of players. Interestingly, the RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 recently gained attention at The Game Awards for deliberately embracing the classic turn-based style of Final Fantasy.
