Before a planned revival, the classic sci-fi series Stargate SG-1 is moving to a new streaming platform. Originally a continuation of the 1994 movie Stargate, the show ran for 10 seasons between 1997 and 2007, airing on networks like Showtime, Sci Fi Channel, and Sky1.
I’m so excited to share that Stargate SG-1 is finally hitting Netflix in the US on February 15th! That means all 10 seasons – all 214 episodes – will be available to stream, which is amazing news for fans like me.
You can watch all ten seasons of Stargate SG-1 on Prime Video and MGM+. If you have Hulu, you can watch seasons 1 through 6. Seasons 1-4 are available on Netflix, and the first two seasons are on HBO Max. For free streaming, all ten seasons are on Pluto TV, with seasons 1-3 and 5 also on Plex. Tubi has seasons 1-4, and The Roku Channel has season 3.
Created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, Stargate SG-1 continues the story from the original movie, following the SG-1 team as they journey to other planets through a mysterious alien portal. They explore the galaxy, seeking out new technologies and allies to help protect Earth from various alien dangers.
The success of Stargate SG-1 led to a whole universe of related content, including the animated series Stargate Infinity, the spin-off Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe, and Stargate Origins. It also produced direct-to-DVD movies like Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum, plus a wide variety of merchandise, video games, and toys.
As a longtime viewer, one of the things I always appreciated about Stargate SG-1 was its fantastic ensemble cast. You’ve got Richard Dean Anderson leading the way, and he’s supported by a truly memorable team, including Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge. Don S. Davis was a solid presence, and later seasons brought in great additions like Corin Nemec, Ben Browder, and Claudia Black – honestly, the show had a revolving door of talent, and it really benefited from it.
Fans of science fiction are in for a treat! Following the announcement that Amazon MGM Studios is creating a new Stargate series, the original Stargate SG-1 will also be available on Netflix. Details about the story and who will star in the new series are still a secret, but it promises to be a fresh take on the beloved franchise.
Many fans consider Stargate SG-1 to be one of the greatest science fiction shows ever made. While the 2004 Battlestar Galactica reboot was praised for being a dark, serious, and dramatic take on the genre, Stargate SG-1 stood out as its opposite, providing a more inviting, hopeful, and fun experience.
The show is known for being playfully over-the-top and acknowledging its own silliness, which many fans considered its biggest asset compared to more serious science fiction shows. This balance has definitely contributed to its lasting popularity. Currently, only sci-fi classics like Doctor Who and Star Trek have a similar level of cultural impact, influence, and ability to appeal to audiences across different generations as Stargate SG-1.
