The production of a real-life movie version of the upcoming video game “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” has already begun, prior to its official release.
It has been exclusively revealed that game developer Sandfall Interactive is collaborating with Story Kitchen to create a movie adaptation of their game, which will be distributed by Kepler Interactive. The game is set for release on April 24 across Xbox, PlayStation, PC (via Steam and Epic). This title was recently showcased during the Xbox Developer Direct event and made DualShockers’ list of Top 10 Most Anticipated Indie Games of 2025. In addition, it graced the covers of “PC Gamer” and “Edge Magazine.
Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg expressed their excitement about partnering with Sandfall Interactive to translate the intriguing storyline and captivating characters of ‘Expedition 33’ onto the silver screen. The game’s narrative depth and well-developed characters offer a strong base for a cinematic adaptation that will appeal to both video game enthusiasts and film fans.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33″ is set in a world reminiscent of Belle Époque France. As per the official description, the game revolves around the character of the Paintress, a powerful figure who each year paints a cursed number on a monolith, leading to the disappearance of everyone of that age. With the number dwindling annually, humanity is facing imminent extinction. The players join Expedition 33 on their quest to halt this cycle by confronting the Paintress before she paints another fatal mark.
The game “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” takes place in a world styled after Belle Époque France. In this story, the central character is the Paintress, a god-like figure who marks a cursed number on a monolith each year, causing everyone of that age to vanish. As the years pass and the number decreases, humanity is facing extinction. Players embark on a journey with Expedition 33 to stop this cycle by challenging the Paintress before she paints another fatal symbol.
At present, choices regarding casting and direction for the movie are being made. Story Kitchen will have Johnson, Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Elena Sandoval as producers.

Story Kitchen is actively working on various projects, such as adapting the “Tomb Raider” series for both animated Netflix shows and live-action productions at Amazon MGM Studios. They are also developing “Just Cause” with Universal, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto and co-produced by 87North; “Streets of Rage” in collaboration with Lionsgate and Escape Artists; and “Toejam & Early” for Amazon MGM Studios, where Steph Curry is a co-producer. Story Kitchen holds first-look deals for TV content at Amazon and animated films at Dreamworks Animation.
