With the imminent launch of Civilization 7, we’re getting glimpses of its unique leaders, and one intriguing figure who’s caught my eye is Himiko! Firaxis Games held off on shining a light on her until their Modern Age reveals, but now she’s stealing the show. Having appeared in only two previous versions, Himiko will lead for the very first time in Civilization 7, and that’s not all – she’s also been given an additional alternate persona!
Civilization 7 Gives Civ 6 Hero Two Unique Personas
In Civilization 7, the distinction between leaders and civilizations plays a significant role, and many of the leaders featured are newcomers to the series. Previously, some of these characters appeared in past games as Great People or other roles, but they will make their debut as leaders in Civ 7. Himiko is one such character, having made her initial appearance only in late 2015.
In the release of Civilization Revolution 2 Plus on PlayStation Vita, Himiko was among the three new leaders introduced, taking the place of Tokugawa Ieyasu. She hadn’t appeared since the Babylon Pack for Civ 6, which dropped in November of 2020. This expansion pack introduced a fresh Heroes & Legends game mode, enabling players to enlist legendary characters such as Mulan, Hippolyta, Hercules, Himiko, and numerous others, as Hero units.
Each character possessed a distinct exceptional talent, and Himiko was the solitary civilian, non-combat Hero featured in the game. Unlike raw power, Himiko influenced city-states. She had the capacity to spend a predetermined number of charges to appoint an additional envoy at a city-state or mobilize troops from any city-state you govern as Suzerain, without needing any gold. Now, Himiko assumes a complete leadership role in Civ 7, demonstrating some familiar strengths.
In this game, the characters representing Himiko can be seen as emphasizing diplomacy. The dilemma is whether players prefer a more scientific or culturally-focused approach. The default character, Queen of Wa, has a special diplomatic mission that increases science for your alliances, supports other missions at no cost, and earns extra science based on the number of leaders you’re friendly or helpful towards.
Players opting for the High Shaman character will experience an enhanced sense of joy per age in all buildings focused on happiness, along with bonus productivity from such structures. However, they must weigh this benefit against a thoughtful consideration of certain trade-offs. The High Shaman named Himiko will witness an uptick in cultural influence at the expense of a slightly diminished scientific progression. This impact becomes more pronounced during celebratory events.
In both cases, you can utilize multiple ways to win, but solely those who own the Founders Content Pack DLC will be able to play as the High Shaman character. The Queen of Wa persona for Himiko is already in the standard game, yet it’s only included with the Founders Edition; until February 28, you can buy this pack separately as DLC if you have the base game or decide to purchase the Deluxe Edition instead.
