In about a month, Civilization 7 will officially debut, and we’re gradually uncovering the final groups of civilizations from the Modern Age. The latest disclosure, which many had anticipated due to its fitting nature for a game with Napoleon as a leader, has finally been confirmed: we now know the unique abilities of the French Empire in Civilization 7. Given France’s tumultuous past, players will have multiple strategies to craft and sustain their own French Empire in Civilization 7.

Civ 7 Reveals French Empire and New Jacobin Unit

After the announcement that Marquis de Lafayette is one of the leaders in Civilization 7, it has also been confirmed that the French Empire will be one of the civilizations available during the Modern Age at launch. Initially, Napoleon Bonaparte was among the first leaders unveiled, with his alternate persona connected to players who have previously logged into Civilization 6. This move likely targeted new players (or those still playing Civilization 5) by encouraging them to buy Civilization 6 before the release of Civilization 7.

Until now, they had not provided confirmation regarding the French Empire or its specifics. In Civilization 7, players can employ a blend of military and diplomatic skills when utilizing the French. Their distinctive ability “Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité” grants them the power to pick the benefits of any government during the Modern Age’s Golden Age.

A suitable pick, the Salon will serve as an exceptional French structure that offers a blend of joy and culture. Likewise, the Jardin à la Française unique building will deliver a dash of happiness alongside culture, making them ideal companions in urban settings. One of the most intriguing exclusive units within the French Empire could be the Jacobin, a special Great Person Unit tied to the Avenue district.

When unlocked, players will receive one of the following Jacobin units at random:

  • Paul Barras: Activated on a Palace to increase Relationship Gains by a set percentage per Diplomatic Action.
  • Jacques Nicolas Billaud-Varenne: Activated on a Palace to grant all Land Units increased Combat Strength in Districts.
  • Jacques Pierre Brissot: Activated on a Palace to grant all your Units increased Combat Strength.
  • Etta Palm D’Aelders: Activated on a Palace or a City Hall to add a large amount of Happiness to it.
  • Georges Danton: Activated on a Palace to immediately trigger a Celebration.
  • Camille Desmoulins: Activated on any City’s District to add Happiness on Quarters in that City.
  • Olympe de Gouges: Activated on a Palace to add Science on Quarters in that City.
  • Jean-Paul Marat: Activated on a Palace to add Culture on Quarters in that City.
  • Maximilien Robespierre: Activated on a Palace to unlock a Unique Tradition, ‘Reign of Terror,’ which grants increased Culture on Districts, but reduces Growth Rate by a set percentage in Cities.
  • Louis Antoine de Saint-Just: Activated on a Commander Unit to change its name to “Archangel of the Terror.” Units within its Command Radius gain increased Combat Strength.

These entities are, in fact, associated with the highly impactful “Society of Supporters of the Constitution,” later known as the “Jacobin Society, Advocates of Liberty and Equality.” Often referred to simply as the Jacobin Club, it was established within the prestigious Palace of Versailles. This group played a crucial role during the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror, a period marked by numerous executions of individuals accused of political offenses.

In Civilization 7, when a unit is initially unlocked, a player gets one randomly selected, with the option to acquire more at an escalating price. These units can significantly aid in a Military Victory, but they can also complement each other effectively while chasing a Culture Victory, particularly in the construction of iconic structures like the Eiffel Tower, which can steer a civilization towards that path.
