Cillian Murphy is done with Tommy Shelby after Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man

Cillian Murphy has finished playing Tommy Shelby after the film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, marking the end of his time with the character.

The actor has portrayed the Birmingham gangster since 2013, and the series follows his journey from a tough street fighter after World War One to a Member of Parliament as World War Two approaches.

The new Peaky Blinders story, “The Immortal Man,” brings Tommy Shelby back into the world of crime he left behind, set against the backdrop of Birmingham during the Second World War. While Tommy’s away, his son, Duke Shelby (Barry Keoghan), takes control of the gang, proving to be ruthless and getting caught up in a dangerous plot with the Nazis.

The story of The Immortal Man has been the central focus of the show, and Cillian Murphy has stated that he won’t be continuing with the role beyond this storyline.

Cillian Murphy says Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is the “natural conclusion” for Tommy Shelby

Cillian Murphy believes the upcoming film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, will be a fitting end to his character, Tommy Shelby, after 13 years. He shared this while talking to Games Radar+, confirming it feels like the natural conclusion for the character when asked if the movie would be his last portrayal of Tommy.

Absolutely, I think the world of Peaky Blinders, and Steven Knight’s vision for it, could definitely continue. I’m confident it will. However, playing this character has been a huge part of my life – almost a quarter of it – and while it’s been incredibly rewarding, that’s a long time to dedicate to one role.

The actor expressed gratitude that the show continued to evolve and improve throughout its run, rather than becoming stagnant, and described the movie as a way of rewarding loyal fans for their support. He also highly commended the series creator, Steven Knight, calling him an exceptional writer.

He shared that he felt incredibly fortunate to have collaborated with this person for so many years, and to have developed this particular character over such a long period. He added that he naturally wanted to see the story reach its intended ending.

But don’t worry, the show isn’t over! Steven Knight is already planning two more seasons for the BBC and Netflix. These new seasons will focus on the next generation of the Shelby family and their lives in Birmingham during the 1950s as the city recovers from the war.

Although Eddie Murphy won’t be acting in the movie, he is a producer. It’s currently unknown whether any other actors from the original film will return.
