As a lifelong cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of cinema, I can hardly contain my excitement for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming project, “The Odyssey.” Having been captivated by Homer’s epic tale since first reading it in high school English class, I find myself at the edge of my seat, eagerly awaiting the opportunity to witness this timeless story unfold on the grand canvas that is IMAX.
Unveiling the details now, my friend! The upcoming production by director Christopher Nolan at Universal Studios has finally come to light.
Based on a recent update from Universal Pictures, the filmmaker’s upcoming project is an epic action movie filled with mythical elements, filmed using cutting-edge IMAX technology. This film will adapt Homer’s classic tale for the first time on IMAX screens and will be released in cinemas everywhere on July 17, 2026.
Nolan has gathered an exceptional cast for his grand story: Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron are set to take on the roles. The studio and Nolan’s follow-up to their Academy Award-winning film “Oppenheimer” aim for a production kickoff in the early half of 2025. Nolan will pen the script and produce alongside Emma Thomas under their Syncopy label.
One of the earliest works of literature that continues to captivate modern readers is Homer’s epic poem, “The Odyssey,” which originates from ancient Greece. This timeless story revolves around the adventures of legendary Greek hero, Odysseus, as he navigates through his challenging voyage back home after the Trojan War.
Over the years, “The Odyssey” has been translated to the silver screen multiple times. Initially, it was portrayed in a 1911 silent film by Giuseppe de Liguoro, and later in 1954 with the movie “Ulysses,” starring Kirk Douglas. Additionally, the satirical comedy film “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” from 2000 draws inspiration loosely from Homer’s epic, while “The Return” scheduled for release in 2024, featuring Ralph Fiennes, is based on the final sections of the famous poem.
Last week, Holland openly admitted that he had agreed to participate in a project without fully understanding its details. In a recent interview on “The Dish” podcast, Holland confessed, “To tell the truth, I’m not entirely clear about what the project is.” He added, “I’m really looking forward to it, but there hasn’t been much information released yet. I had a meeting with [Nolan] and it was fantastic. He gave me a rough idea of what the project entails, and when he’s ready, I’m sure he’ll reveal more details.
