Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Adds John Leguizamo

Actor John Leguizamo is the newest addition to the ensemble cast of director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film titled “The Odyssey.” He will be working alongside previously confirmed actors Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie and Jon Bernthal.

Last month, Universal announced that the movie is an epic action tale with a mythical flavor, filmed worldwide utilizing cutting-edge IMAX film technology. This is the initial presentation of Homer’s seminal story on IMAX screens.

Or, more concisely:

Universal revealed last month that the movie, an international epic action film, employs innovative IMAX tech for its first-ever adaptation of Homer’s classic tale.

One of the oldest works of literature, Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey” in ancient Greek, continues to captivate contemporary readers. This timeless tale recounts the adventures of the legendary Greek hero, Odysseus, as he navigates a challenging voyage back home after the Trojan War.

The movie adaptation of ‘The Odyssey’ is scheduled to hit theaters on July 17, 2026. Nolan will be in charge of both writing and production for this project, working alongside Emma Thomas under the Syncopy label.

According to recent reports by EbMaster, part of an upcoming film is set to be shot in Sicily – a region renowned as the setting for Odysseus’ journeys in ancient literature. Filming is scheduled to start in spring 2025 on Favignana Island, believed by some to be the location where Homer envisioned Odysseus and his crew disembarking.

Legendary comedian and actor John Leguizamo’s career stretches over four decades, featuring notable roles in films such as “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar” (for which he received a Golden Globe nomination), “Romeo + Juliet,” “Summer of Sam,” “Moulin Rouge,” “The Pest,” the “Ice Age” series, and “The Menu,” to name a few. His television work includes “When They See Us,” “The Power,” “Waco,” “Bloodline,” and the MSNBC travel series “Leguizamo Explores America.” He was nominated for Emmys for both “When They See Us” and “Waco.” Additionally, he has showcased his talents in several one-man Broadway shows, including “Freak,” “Sexaholix,” and “Latin History for Morons,” earning him multiple Tony Award nominations.

Universal had no comment. The InSneider was first to report the news of Leguizamo’s casting.
