Christopher Nolan Movie ‘The Odyssey’ is Apparently Woke for its Casting

Okay, let’s talk about The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan‘s new take on the classic Homer poem. There’s been some chatter about the casting of Helen of Troy, but putting that aside, this is a visually stunning epic. Matt Damon delivers a strong performance as Odysseus, the king desperately trying to get back to his wife, Penelope (played by Anne Hathaway), and son, Telemachus (Tom Holland) after the Trojan War. It’s a long and perilous journey, and Nolan doesn’t shy away from the mythical obstacles – think giant cyclopses, the bewitching Circe, and, of course, those irresistible sirens. It’s a classic story brought to life with Nolan’s signature flair.

So far, only half of the actors and their roles in the movie have been revealed, sparking a lot of discussion. One popular rumor is that Lupita Nyong’o, known for her role in 12 Years a Slave, will play Helen of Troy – a legendary figure said to be the daughter of Zeus and the most beautiful woman in the world – in a reimagined story. However, this casting choice has drawn criticism online. Comedian Chrissie Mayr expressed strong disapproval on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Christopher Nolan previously altered The Odyssey and that casting Nyong’o as Helen of Troy is disrespectful to the original story.

Someone else pointed out that Helen of Troy was historically described as having fair skin and blonde hair, and was so famously beautiful that her abduction sparked the Trojan War. They argued that casting an actress who doesn’t fit that description undermines the original story and disrespects the author’s intent. This even prompted a reaction from Elon Musk, who stated that director Christopher Nolan had compromised his artistic principles with this casting decision.

Luckily, this strange idea didn’t spread much online, and one fan of the director responded by saying:

Claiming Christopher Nolan has lost his integrity is a strong statement, implying dissatisfaction with his latest work. While people often disagree about creative choices, questioning someone’s integrity is a serious matter. It’s crucial to distinguish between simply disliking something and challenging the fundamental values of an artist.

Why Would Anybody Question Christopher Nolan?

As a huge fan, I truly believe Christopher Nolan is one of the best directors ever. What’s amazing is that in all twelve of his films, he’s always picked the perfect cast. I remember when he and Mark Romanek saw something special in Robin Williams – a hidden ability to play quietly menacing roles, like in Insomnia, long before people were used to seeing him in comedies. And he has a knack for launching careers! He really brought Tom Hardy to everyone’s attention with Inception, and gave a then-up-and-coming John David Washington a starring role in Tenet. Of course, he completely transformed Christian Bale’s career. American Psycho was a cool, cult hit for Bale, but Batman Begins was the movie that really made him a superstar.

Lupita Nyong’o and Travis Scott could be amazing in this epic, fantastical setting. Ignore anyone who’s negative about it.
