Christian Bale on Remake of ‘American Psycho’: “I Like Brave People”

Director Luca Guadagnino, known for films like Suspiria and Challengers, is planning a fresh take on American Psycho. While the project was initially announced in 2024, they are now searching for an actor to play the lead role, previously made famous by Christian Bale. Bale recently discussed the upcoming adaptation while promoting his new movie, The Bride!, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Released in 2000 and based on Bret Easton Ellis’s novel, the darkly humorous thriller American Psycho quickly became a pop culture icon. Christian Bale recently shared fond memories of working with director Mary Harron on the film, which portrays a narcissistic and murderous Wall Street banker in 1987 Manhattan. The movie, famous for its memorable and often unsettling scenes – including Bateman’s detailed analysis of Huey Lewis while wielding an axe and wearing a clear raincoat – has maintained its status as a cult classic for the past 25 years.

Christian Bale offered his support for the upcoming remake, saying he admires those willing to take on the challenge. The new film will be produced by Sam Pressman, son of the producer of the original American Psycho. Director Luca Guadagnino plans a fresh take on the story with a script by Scott Z. Burns, known for his work on The Bourne Ultimatum and The Report.

Chris Hanley, a producer on the original American Psycho film, has expressed support for a new adaptation, despite some questioning the need for a remake. He trusts director Luca Guadagnino, praising his consistent quality. Guadagnino himself shared last year that he’s passionately working on bringing Bret Easton Ellis’s novel, a significant influence on him, to the screen once more. Both the book and the original film resonated deeply with a generation of horror enthusiasts and filmmakers, becoming a frequent topic of debate around the turn of the millennium. It’s also fascinating to imagine how different the movie might have been if Leonardo DiCaprio, who auditioned for the role, had been cast.

Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film has faced challenges finding its lead actor. Bret Easton Ellis, author of American Psycho, revealed on his podcast that several well-known actors declined the role because they didn’t want to be compared to Christian Bale’s iconic performance. Jacob Elordi (Euphoria, Saltburn) and Austin Butler (Dune: Part Two, Eddington) are reportedly being considered. It’s a daunting task to step into a role so strongly associated with one actor, much like trying to follow in the footsteps of Helen Mirren or Daniel Day-Lewis. However, simply avoiding that comparison doesn’t guarantee a good movie, as seen with the recent remake of The Running Man, which replaced Arnold Schwarzenegger with Glen Powell and received a lukewarm reception.

It’s not surprising that people often react negatively to the idea of revisiting classic characters in new ways – whether it’s through remakes, reboots, or adaptations. Harrison Ford famously declared that Indiana Jones would retire with him, and similar resistance has met many casting choices. For example, when Michael Keaton was initially cast as Batman in 1989, fans were skeptical, despite knowing Jack Nicholson would be a great Joker. More recently, Heath Ledger – known for his role in the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You – faced similar doubts when he was chosen to play the Joker, but he quickly proved everyone wrong.

Christian Bale’s performance as Patrick Bateman is iconic, and even the original author, Bret Easton Ellis, isn’t keen on revisiting the character. Whoever takes on the role has a lot to live up to, and the project is considered a daring one. With director Luca Guadagnino at the helm, audiences can anticipate a fresh and distinctive interpretation of this classic serial killer story. Guadagnino excels at tackling challenging and unconventional subjects, as demonstrated by his upcoming film, Artificial, which will explore the world of A.I. and even address Elon Musk. He clearly has a strong track record with complex characters, making him a fitting choice for American Psycho.
