Christian Bale has publicly commented on the new remake of the film he’s famous for starring in. While he thinks it’s a daring move to revisit the story, he says he hopes the filmmakers succeed.
Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is developing a new version of American Psycho, based on Bret Easton Ellis’s novel. Scott Z. Burns is writing the script. So far, no actor has been cast as Patrick Bateman, the role Christian Bale famously played in the 2000 film. Bale recently shared his initial reaction to the reboot at the premiere of his latest movie, The Bride!
Christian Bale Offers Support to the American Psycho Remake
Christian Bale said anyone interested in taking on the project should go for it. He fondly remembers making the original film with director Mary Harron, calling it a great experience. He acknowledged the new attempt, unsure if it’s a remake, but wished them well, saying he admires people who are willing to take risks.
The first American Psycho movie led to a 2002 direct-to-video sequel, American Psycho 2, starring Mila Kunis and directed by Morgan J. Freeman. Critics heavily disliked the sequel, effectively ending plans for another film. However, by 2024, reports surfaced about a reboot of the novel being developed by Lionsgate. Bret Easton Ellis, the author, has since mentioned that the reboot is facing difficulties during production.
In February, podcast host Ellis revealed that several well-known actors had declined roles in the upcoming film. He believes this might be because they don’t want to be compared to Christian Bale’s performance in the previous movie. According to sources, this new film will be a fresh take on the story, vastly different from Mary Harron’s 2000 version and won’t resemble it at all.
Who Will Play the New Patrick Bateman?
So, remember all the buzz about Austin Butler potentially playing Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s American Psycho remake? Well, it looks like that’s not happening after all. Honestly, following Christian Bale’s iconic performance would be a huge challenge for anyone – the comparisons would be brutal! What’s really intriguing, though, is that Guadagnino is promising something completely different from Mary Harron’s original. That tells me this isn’t just a retread of familiar ground; they’re clearly aiming to take the story in a bold, new direction. It’s a risky move, but one that definitely has my attention.
There’s no confirmed release date yet for Luca Guadagnino’s film version of American Psycho. However, Christian Bale is currently starring in The Bride!, which will be in theaters on March 6th.
