It’s been over 21 years since the game Locomotion was first released. While it didn’t receive perfect reviews initially, it gained a dedicated fanbase, many of whom still play it today. The game hasn’t been officially updated in years, but fans stepped in to continue its development. Their work culminated in a mod called OpenLoco, which has just been updated to a new version.
Version 25.12 is now available, and the biggest improvement is that the project finally has a 64-bit version! Previously, like the original Chris Sawyer’s Locomotion, the mod was limited to 32-bit. This caused performance problems and crashes, especially when playing on large maps bigger than those in the original game.
We’ve also made the interface more user-friendly, letting you resize many windows however you like. This release includes several bug fixes as well.

What’s OpenLoco?
OpenLoco is a free and open-source recreation of the classic game Locomotion by Chris Sawyer, built on a much better engine. To play, you’ll still need the original Locomotion game files – OpenLoco isn’t a complete, self-contained game.
As a huge fan of Chris Sawyer’s Locomotion, I’m so excited about this project! It finally lets me play the game flawlessly on my modern PC. Not only does it work great, but the graphics have been seriously upgraded – I can even play in 4K! They’ve also polished the interface, fixed tons of bugs, and really expanded the gameplay. It’s amazing – you can build much bigger and more complex parks than ever before! It feels like a whole new experience.
If you’re looking to play Chris Sawyer’s Locomotion now, OpenLoco is the recommended way to do it. Also, the game is currently 80% off on Steam as part of the winter sale, but the discount ends on January 5th.
