As the new movie Avengers: Doomsday approaches later this year, it’s worth remembering how much of a phenomenon Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were. Those two films were incredibly popular, but some fans also strongly disliked Peter Quill (and the actor Chris Pratt) because of his choices in the movie.
Chris Pratt recently talked on the YouTube channel Out of Order about the strong negative reaction he received from Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. Many blamed his character, Peter Quill, for making impulsive decisions in Infinity War that they believed contributed to Thanos’s Snap and, eventually, Iron Man’s death. Pratt went on to explain…
It’s amazing how much criticism Peter Quill received for his role in Iron Man’s death. People really disliked the character, and I experienced that firsthand – strangers would confront me asking why he made that choice. It was frustrating because he didn’t intentionally do anything wrong! Plus, if Quill hadn’t acted, those two movies would have been incredibly short and lacked any dramatic tension. A simple ‘We got him!’ wouldn’t have made for a compelling story.
In Avengers: Infinity War, the Guardians of the Galaxy team up with Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Doctor Strange to try and take the Infinity Gauntlet away from Thanos. Their plan almost succeeds, but when Peter Quill finds out Gamora is dead, he gets overwhelmed with emotion. This distraction lets Thanos regain control of the situation.

Fans were understandably upset with Peter Quill after recent events, and even the director, James Gunn, wasn’t thrilled with how things played out. Many people unfairly blamed Chris Pratt himself for his character’s choices. Pratt acknowledges that while Quill’s actions were necessary for the story to continue, he understands why fans reacted so strongly. He also admits he didn’t foresee such a negative response. Pratt went on to elaborate…
Looking back, I realize how much impact Quill’s experience had, and the consequences of what happened to him. While I’m glad it did happen, I didn’t foresee how memorable it would become. At the time, I was just figuring things out, like many of us.
The conclusion of the last two Avengers films directly influenced the fantastic finale of the Guardians of the Galaxy series. Even though Star-Lord made a questionable decision, it ultimately paid off for viewers. We know Star-Lord will return in the future, but the details are still unknown. Let’s hope his next appearance doesn’t cause too much fan backlash.
