Chris Hemsworth’s R-Rated Netflix Action Thriller Returns As Global Smash Hit Amid Major Franchise Update

Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction has been successful.

Chris Hemsworth has become a hugely popular actor, largely thanks to his role as Thor in several successful Marvel movies. He currently has the most solo films of any actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with four, but Tom Holland will equal that record with the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Chris Hemsworth has a busy 2026 ahead of him. He’ll reprise his role as Thor in the December release of Avengers: Doomsday, a large-scale, unique multiverse crossover event. He’s already seen success this year with the action thriller Crime 101, which, despite a disappointing theatrical run, is currently the most popular title on Prime Video. Now, another one of Hemsworth’s action movies is also topping the streaming charts.

Currently, Extraction ranks as the 10th most popular movie on Netflix around the world, according to data from FlixPatrol. Released on April 24, 2020, this R-rated action thriller appears alongside films like Anaconda, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson on Netflix’s worldwide top movies list. Bruce Willis’ Striking Distance is currently at the top of that chart.

As of today, the movie Extraction is popular in 37 countries. However, it’s currently the number one movie on Netflix in only one of those: Lebanon. The action thriller is also seeing a renewed interest on Netflix in places like Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates. Despite its international success, Extraction isn’t currently trending as highly in the United States.

Despite its previous popularity, Extraction isn’t currently among the top 10 most-watched movies on Netflix in the US. Instead, animated films like Minions: The Rise of Gru, Madagascar 3: Europe‘s Most Wanted, and Madagascar are leading the charts. Right now, the thriller Beast, featuring Idris Elba, is the most popular movie on Netflix in the United States.

The popularity of action movies is currently strong, and Netflix is capitalizing on that with plans for a third Extraction film. Chris Hemsworth will be back as the main character, Tyler Rake, and Idris Elba, who recently starred in Netflix’s hit movie, will also return. Golshifteh Farahani will reprise her role as Nik Khan in the upcoming sequel.

I’m really excited to hear that Extraction 3 is officially happening! According to Deadline, Sam Hargrave is returning to direct, and filming is slated to begin this summer. Interestingly, David Weil – who worked on Citadel – is taking over writing duties from Joe Russo, who wrote the first two films. I guess Russo is swamped with the new Avengers movies. Honestly, with Extraction climbing the Netflix charts again, the timing couldn’t be better for another installment!
