The new crime thriller starring Chris Hemsworth is already getting rave reviews, and many are calling it one of the year’s best films – even though it hasn’t been released in theaters yet.

JoBlo, a popular movie review site, recently called Crime 101 “the first great film of 2026” in a post on X (formerly Twitter). They also praised the film’s impressive cast and described it as consistently suspenseful with a particularly strong and satisfying conclusion. Other early reviews have similarly celebrated the movie as a big hit.

Tom Chatalbash of FilmSpeak praised the movie as a strong crime thriller, highlighting its polished production, smart writing, and memorable characters. He noted its captivating, atmospheric depiction of Los Angeles and compared it to classic films like Heat, Drive, and Collateral, calling it a truly impressive and traditional winner.

Erik Davis from Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes said he really enjoyed the movie, comparing it to films like Heat. He described it as a sophisticated heist thriller, something you don’t often see, and mentioned Out of Sight and Michael Mann’s Thief as similar examples.

I just saw a really interesting film directed by Bart Layton. It’s about a skilled thief who pulls off a string of daring jewelry robberies, all happening right along the famous 101 freeway. It’s a clever setup and I’m eager to see how it all unfolds.

In addition to Chris Hemsworth, the film Crime 101 features Regina King as Sharon Colvin, an insurance broker who has a fraught encounter with Delroy Davis, Mark Ruffalo as Detective Lou Lubesnick, who is pursuing Davis, and Barry Keoghan as the troubled criminal Ormon.

The show Crime 101 boasts a talented cast including Monica Barbaro, Nick Nolte, Devon Bostick, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Corey Hawkins, Tate Donovan, Babak Tafti, Drew Powell, John Douglas, Matthew Del Negro, Deborah Hedwall, Paul Adelstein, and Payman Maadi.

Why the Stars of Crime 101 Worked So Well Together

While filming Crime 101 in April 2025, Halle Berry shared a story about a co-star, praising his character. She explained that he supported her during a difficult moment on set, and that act of kindness made her a lifelong fan. “He’s a stand-up guy,” Berry said, adding that he “stood up for a woman” and earned her respect.

Hemsworth admitted he was initially intimidated working with Halle Berry, as he’s been a fan of her work for a long time. He explained that acting opposite her, he didn’t want to simply be starstruck, but also felt she created a comfortable and collaborative environment where he could experiment and explore different approaches to his performance.

Crime 101 is slated to arrive in theaters on Feb. 13.
