Chinese scientists are working on making plants that glow naturally, with the goal of using them as a sustainable alternative to streetlights, much like the glowing plants seen in the movie Avatar’s fictional world of Pandora.
This exciting project, inspired by fireflies (also called lightning bugs), hopes to transform Earth into a world reminiscent of the fantastical planet Pandora.
Dr. Li Renhan is the driving force behind a fascinating project. He started Magicpen Bio, a Chinese biotechnology company, and is pioneering a way to create natural light using a combination of firefly and plant genes.
He grew up in the countryside, and his family didn’t have much money. He remembers spending warm nights lying in a hammock among his grandfather’s bamboo trees, often watching fireflies land on his arms, he shared with local news reporters.
Scientists say Avatar-style glowing plants could replace street lights
I was so amazed to learn about Dr. Renhan! He got his Ph.D. from China Agricultural University, specializing in gene editing. And get this – he actually used that knowledge to make 20 different kinds of plants glow! It’s like something straight out of Avatar, those incredible glowing plants from the movie. It’s seriously cool!
He explained that their goal was to give plants the ability to glow in the dark by inserting genes from animals, such as fireflies. They hope to use this technology to boost tourism and create nighttime attractions. He envisions landscapes filled with glowing plants, creating a real-life version of the world from the movie ‘Avatar’.
Magicpen Bio displayed its innovative, glowing plants – including sunflowers, orchids, and chrysanthemums – at the Zhongguancun Forum. Remarkably, these plants lit up without needing any electricity.
Dr. Renhan believes this offers a greener option than electric lights, which research shows can interfere with sleep and negatively affect our body’s natural rhythms.
These plants offer benefits beyond just attracting tourists. They can be used in city parks without relying on electricity, making them a very efficient and environmentally friendly option. They only require water and fertilizer to operate, helping to conserve energy, lower carbon emissions, and even provide nighttime lighting for urban areas.
In a remarkable breakthrough, a paralyzed veteran is now able to play World of Warcraft using just his thoughts, thanks to an implant developed by Elon Musk’s company, Neuralink.
