The movie “Octopus with Broken Arms” maintained its reign over the Chinese box office, earning approximately RMB76.6 million ($10.6 million) and increasing its overall earnings to around RMB686 million ($95.3 million), as reported by Artisan Gateway’s data.
The Jacky Gan-directed crime thriller “As One Production” has been steadily gaining traction since its December 28 debut, securing its place as this year’s initial blockbuster.
In the third week of its run, “Big World” from Gengxi Pictures maintained its second position at the box office, grossing $6.4 million over the weekend. With a total earnings of $91.5 million so far, this drama directed by Yang Lina about a young man with cerebral palsy and his connection with his grandmother remains deeply affecting for viewers.
In third position, the film “Honey Money Phony” from Maoyan Pictures earned an additional $5.9 million, bringing its overall box office earnings to $40.4 million. This comedy, directed by Su Biao and featuring a woman navigating financial deceit, has been consistently successful since it premiered on December 31.
The latest movie titled “Fake Dad,” produced by iQIYI Pictures, opened in fourth position earning $2.5 million. Directed and starring Jia Bing as Yang Haoliang, the plot revolves around a former musician who stumbles upon an individual posing as him. To unravel this mystery, he recruits his son, Yang Shiyue played by Yin Zheng, which ultimately results in an unforeseen collaboration with the imposter.
Completing the top five positions, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3″ from Paramount started with an earnings of $1.8 million. The only other film from Hollywood in the top ten is “Mufasa: The Lion King” by Disney, which ranked tenth and has accumulated a total of $15.4 million so far, as reported by Ent Group.
Over the weekend, I was blown away as the box office earnings clocked in at $34.5 million, a drop from last week’s impressive $44.3 million. However, when you look at the bigger picture, China’s total box office for 2025 has reached an astounding $157.4 million – but it’s important to note that this figure represents a decrease of 11.4% compared to the same period in 2024.
This dip in performance is a testament to ongoing difficulties facing the theatrical market, yet we can’t ignore the strength of holdovers like “Octopus with Broken Arms,” which have offered a sense of stability amidst these challenges.
2024 proved to be a challenging year for China’s box office, with the market witnessing a steep drop of approximately 22% compared to the previous year, resulting in a total annual revenue of $5.8 billion. This figure represents the lowest annual income since 2014 and is a significant 27% below its pre-pandemic average. The month of December was particularly quiet in China, earning $321 million, making it the eighth-highest grossing month of the year and falling short by 46% compared to pre-pandemic levels. However, there’s a lot riding on the Lunar New Year holidays that start at the end of January. Historically, this period is marked by big local releases and a significant boost for the box office.
