China Box Office: ‘Octopus with Broken Arms’ Continues Reign as Dull Market Looks for Lunar New Year Boost

For five straight weekends, the movie titled “Octopus with Broken Arms” dominated China’s box office, raking in approximately RMB 51.2 million ($7.1 million) during the Jan. 24-26 weekend, as reported by Artisan Gateway.

The crime thriller has earned a total of $126 million at the box office, making it the initial blockbuster movie of 2025 so far.

In its fifth week, “Honey Money Phony” secured the runner-up position with earnings of $4.5 million. Guided by director Su Biao, this humorous film has continued to captivate audiences, amassing a grand total of $59.7 million over time.

In its position, “Big World” garnered $2.5 million, bringing its total earnings to $105.3 million since debuting. This heartwarming family drama by Yang Lina follows a young man with cerebral palsy and his grandmother.

Making its premiere as the fifth highest-grossing movie, “Operation Hadal” earned $1.1 million during previews prior to its Lunar New Year release on January 29. Led by renowned Hong Kong action director Dante Lam, this action-drama tells the story of the Jiao Long commando unit as they brace for a tough battle in the depths of the ocean when mercenaries seize an offshore platform within Chinese waters. The film boasts a talented cast including Huang Xuan, Yu Shi, Du Jiang, Jiang Luxia and Zhang Hanyu.

Over the past weekend, I witnessed a slight dip in the box office earnings, with a total of $21.5 million collected compared to the $26.4 million amassed the week before. It’s worth noting that this figure represents a 20.8% decrease when compared to the same timeframe last year, at $251.5 million cumulatively.
