Following the Lunar New Year, China‘s cinema earnings stayed robust as “Ne Zha 2” continued its unprecedented success. The film, distributed by Enlight, grossed approximately RMB1.98 billion ($275.3 million) over the weekend of February 14-16, raising its overall total to around $1.64 billion, as reported by Artisan Gateway.
In China, the hit animated movie ‘Ne Zha 2’ continues to lead the market and break Imax records. Last weekend, it added $22 million to Imax’s total earnings, representing a 21% rise from the previous week. By Sunday, its Imax earnings had reached an astounding $104 million ($106 million by Monday), making it the highest-grossing Imax release in China ever, surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame’ ($83.5 million). Worldwide, this film is only the 16th to earn over $100 million at the Imax box office. The movie’s weekend Imax earnings of $22 million are now the third-highest for a single Imax title in its third week, surpassed only by ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, which played in around 75-80 countries.
The sequel to “Ne Zha” looks likely to surpass “The Lion King” and break into the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time. Currently holding the second position among the highest all-time animated earners, it trails only “Inside Out 2,” which has raked in a staggering $1.69 billion over its lifetime. As the worldwide release for “Ne Zha 2” is just getting underway, the movie looks set to keep climbing the all-time earnings chart.
Coming in second place, As One Production’s film “Detective Chinatown 1900” earned $26 million over the weekend, bringing its total earnings to an impressive $443.8 million. The newest installment of this popular comedy-mystery series has managed to maintain its strength in the face of fierce competition from “Ne Zha 2”.
In the year 2025, “Captain America: Brave New World,” Marvel’s initial box office hit, debuted in China, earning a gross of $10.6 million and securing the third spot on the opening weekend charts.
Over the weekend, Fantawild Animation’s “Boonie Bears: Future Reborn” earned an additional $5.5 million, bringing its total to $101.9 million. This enduring animated series continues to be a popular choice for families at the box office.
Completing the list of the top five films, the 2000 classic “In the Mood for Love” by Jet Tone Film and directed by Wong Kar-wai, made a strong comeback in cinemas with a successful $4.8 million opening weekend.
Over the weekend, the total box office earnings amounted to approximately $327.9 million, falling slightly short of the previous week’s $330 million. This has now boosted China’s overall gross revenue for 2025 up to $2.77 billion, representing a significant 95.7% rise compared to the same time frame last year.
The Lunar New Year has broken an Imax record, earning a staggering $121 million by Sunday, nearly doubling the previous holiday Imax record of $66 million set in 2023. With no signs of letting up, the box office success of “Ne Zha 2” is keeping the Chinese film market on a high note as it enjoys one of its most prosperous beginnings to a year.
