China Box Office: ‘Moana 2’ Opens in Second Place as ‘Her Story’ Retains Top Spot

As a film enthusiast who has seen countless movies from various genres and cultures, I must admit that this weekend’s box office performance in mainland China was nothing short of captivating. The success story undoubtedly belongs to “Her Story,” a film that resonates deeply with its female-centric narrative and poignant portrayal of relatable characters navigating through life’s challenges.

For the second week in a row, “Her Story” by Maxtime Pictures, a comedy-drama film predominantly focusing on female viewpoints, was number one at the Chinese box office. Debuting in second position was “Moana 2,” produced by Disney.

According to data from Artisan Gateway, the movie “Her Story” increased its earnings from the previous weekend, bringing in approximately RMB140.9 million ($19.8 million) from Friday to Sunday. The film has now amassed a total of $54.6 million in China.

The film titled “Her Story” was helmed by Shao Yihui, who previously directed “B For Busy” in 2021. This swiftly unfolding narrative centers around two female characters – a single mom recently out of work and a seemingly ordinary neighbor with hidden struggles. As their friendship blossoms, they navigate a myriad of personal challenges such as dealing with an abusive former spouse and exploring new romantic prospects.

In the second spot, “Moana 2” brought in $6.6 million this weekend. As reported by Comscore, it became the top-grossing film globally with a massive $300 million earnings over the weekend worldwide. This figure includes an astounding $221 million earned within five days during the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday period, setting a new box office record.

Over the course of its second weekend, the Japanese animated film “Crayon Shinchan: Our Dinosaur Diary” produced by Shin-Ei Animation earned $3.6 million, placing it in third position. To date, the movie has amassed a total of $14.1 million.

Coming in fourth, the comedic production from Good Luck Film and TV titled “Good Luck,” helmed by director Zhu Lingfeng, made its debut with a revenue of approximately $3.5 million.

In the top five rankings came the Tamil-language Indian movie “Maharaja,” produced by The Route. This film was helmed by director Nithilan Saminathan, and features Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role. Renowned Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap also made an appearance in this film, portraying the villain. Over the weekend, the movie grossed $2.5 million, bringing its overall total to $3.2 million when including preview earnings.

Over the weekend, a combination of newly released and ongoing films boosted the nationwide box office total to an impressive $47.4 million. This brings the year-to-date earnings up to a staggering $5.68 billion. However, it’s worth noting that this figure is still 20.9% lower compared to the same period in 2023.
