The popular “Chicago” universe on NBC keeps expanding. It all began with “Chicago Fire,” which introduced “Chicago PD” through a special episode. Later, another episode of “Chicago Fire” laid the groundwork for the third series, “Chicago Med.” All three shows frequently feature crossover events, helping each one gain popularity and build on the success of the others.
I’m so excited to hear that all three of the Chicago shows are coming back! Chicago Fire will be on for a 15th season, Chicago PD for a 14th, and Chicago Med for a 12th. What’s really cool is that NBC renewed them much earlier than usual – typically, we find out in April, around the time NBCUniversal shows off its upcoming programs to advertisers. Variety reported that this is a surprisingly early announcement for the One Chicago franchise.
It’s no surprise NBC renewed these shows, as they consistently deliver strong ratings in prime time. The fact that all three series share the same fictional universe makes Wednesday nights particularly successful, with the shows airing consecutively. According to Variety, ratings peak during the One Chicago crossover events. Despite the rise of streaming, shows like Chicago Fire demonstrate that traditional television networks still have a significant audience.

Despite their continued success, renewing the three Chicago shows hasn’t always been easy. According to Deadline, last year’s renewal decisions were made at the last minute. The network and studio had a lot of discussion about things like budget cuts. Ultimately, they agreed to shorten each season from 22 to 21 episodes and reduce the cast size across all three shows to save money.
It’s still unclear how many episodes the new seasons of Chicago Fire, PD, and Med will have, especially after last year’s production cuts, though 21 episodes is still a possibility. It’s remarkable that all three shows have held onto their audience for over ten years, both on television and streaming – they consistently rank among the top 10 shows on Peacock. Viewers will be eager to see what new crossover events these seasons bring to keep the shows popular.
