Chevy Chase is still disappointed about his limited involvement in the recent SNL 50th Anniversary special. Despite attending the premiere, he wasn’t featured in the televised special itself, and he’s now revealing his hurt feelings. In his upcoming CNN Films documentary, I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, he explains to People that he anticipated being included on stage with other original SNL cast members like Laraine Newman and Garrett Morris. He admits it was upsetting to see them honored without him. He wondered why he wasn’t asked to participate, particularly during the Weekend Update segment, considering he was the first anchor. He specifically questioned why Bill Murray was included and he wasn’t, stating he doesn’t understand the decision.
Chevy Chase briefly suggested to Lorne Michaels that he be included in the SNL 50th anniversary show, but quickly retracted the idea, admitting he even sent a text saying it was “silly.” However, he believes it was a mistake to leave him out, saying someone should have included him on stage and that it bothered him. According to Chase’s wife, Jayni, there were two potential segments featuring him that the show’s producers were considering, but neither made it into the final broadcast.
According to SNL creator Michaels, they tried out several versions of the Weekend Update segment. He also mentioned receiving a warning – from someone he prefers not to identify – that Chevy Chase wasn’t fully concentrating during rehearsals.
