A movie starring Charlize Theron is finding a new audience in 2025 when it begins streaming on HBO Max, almost ten years after it was first released in theaters.
The spy thriller Atomic Blonde, released in 2017, is currently popular on HBO Max, ranking as the 10th most-watched title on Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service. The movie is based on the graphic novel The Coldest City by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart, with a screenplay written by Kurt Johnstad.
David Leitch directed “Atomic Blonde,” starring Charlize Theron as MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton. The film also features James McAvoy as David Percival, John Goodman as Emmett Kurzfeld, Toby Jones as Eric Gray, Eddie Marsan as Spyglass, and Sofia Boutella as Delphine Lasalle. Theron was also an executive producer on the project.
Despite costing $30 million to make, Atomic Blonde earned $100 million worldwide, making it a profitable film for Focus Features. In the United States, it brought in $51.6 million, with another $48.3 million coming from audiences internationally.
In his review of Atomic Blonde for ScreenRant, Chris Agar noted that while the movie’s script held it back from being truly great, it was still an enjoyable experience. He suggested that fans of the spy genre, and those who were drawn in by the film’s trailers, would likely appreciate it, but it wasn’t necessarily a must-see for everyone.
Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave Atomic Blonde a 79% rating, while audiences scored it at 64%. Although there was discussion about making a sequel after the film’s ending, it hasn’t been officially approved yet.
Both Theron and Leitch have publicly expressed interest in making a sequel to Atomic Blonde, possibly for Netflix. In the meantime, viewers can watch the original Atomic Blonde on HBO Max in the U.S.
