‘Charlie’s Angels’ Stars Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu Reunite With Demi Moore After 6 Years to Champion ‘The Substance’: ‘You’ve Always Had It in You’

Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu, who are well-known for their roles in “Charlie’s Angels”, gathered with Demi Moore for an interview with Vanity Fair. This was their first reunion since 2019, following Lucy Liu’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. In the interview, they praised Moore’s Oscar-nominated performance in “The Substance”. Interestingly, Moore previously appeared as a villainous former Angel named Madison Lee in “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle”, opposite the trio, back in 2003.

Liu expressed that everyone shares the same sentiment – we’re incredibly proud of you, Moore,” he said. “Your performance showcases a talent that has been within you all along, and it’s evident in every piece of work you’ve created. There’s an incredible strength in the vulnerability you project on camera.”

“Liu conveyed to Moore that we’re all feeling incredibly proud – this is a sentiment shared by us all,” he stated. “Your performance demonstrates a skill that has always been within you, and it shines through in every piece of work you’ve produced. The strength you display on camera comes from a place of great vulnerability.

In that instant when you removed your makeup, showcasing the hidden impacts of society’s relentless expectations about beauty, aging, and commercialism, I could truly feel the authenticity. You portrayed a sense of insecurity intertwined with self-acceptance, yet it was also palpable that this vulnerability made others uneasy with your genuine self.

In “The Substance,” Meryl Streep earned a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Elizabeth Sparkle, a once-acclaimed actor and TV fitness guru who resorts to using an experimental drug to halt her declining career. Alongside her Oscar nomination for best actress, she has also been recognized by the Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Many believe that she could be a strong contender for the Academy Award.

Diaz stated to Moore that women are generally taught to be viewed as objects – this is a fact. Whether we’re not famous actresses or we are, it affects every woman. In our case, since we appear on the screen, the objectification is more intense. We’ve even had dolls modeled after us. It’s something that is deeply rooted in us, something we often conform to and cater to in various ways.

Diaz added, ‘As I watch your act, there’s no need for approval from others.’ It seems like in the film industry, a sort of unwritten charter has been followed for decades. You all came along and tore that up, declaring, ‘I refuse this charter. We are rewriting it.’ And not just that, but you’ve decided to do so in the most daring, extreme, and unconventional way possible.”

“Diaz continued, ‘While observing your performance, there’s no need for approval from others.’ It appears as though in the film industry, an unspoken rule has been adhered to for decades. You all have disregarded that rule and said, ‘I reject this rule. We are redefining it.’ And moreover, you’ve chosen to do so in a bold, radical, and outrageous manner.

Last year at Cannes, the film “The Substance,” helmed by Coralie Fargeat, received an award for its outstanding screenplay. Now, it’s garnered five Oscar nominations, among them best picture and best director.
