A new Charlie’s Angels movie is in the works! Sony Pictures has hired Pete Chiarelli, the writer behind popular films like The Proposal and Crazy Rich Asians, to write the screenplay.
Okay, so Sony’s got a new movie in the works, but honestly, who’s actually making it is still a bit of a mystery. There’s a chance it’s Drew Barrymore’s production company, Flower Films – you might remember they did the Charlie’s Angels movies back in the early 2000s. Drew was, of course, in those films – the first Charlie’s Angels came out in 2000, and then Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle in 2003 – alongside Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. Good times!
Originally, Charlie’s Angels was a television crime show featuring Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaquelyn Smith. The actresses played women who became private investigators after completing police academy training. They worked together under the direction of a shadowy figure named Charlie, and communicated with him through his assistant, Bosley (Charlie Townsend).
During the 2000s, actresses Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu played the leading roles in two action films directed by McG. The first movie was a big success, earning over $264 million around the world. Veteran actor Bill Murray joined the cast as the updated version of the character Bosley.
A revival of Charlie’s Angels as a television series was tried in 2011, but it was cancelled after just seven episodes. More recently, a film reboot directed by Elizabeth Banks and starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska was released in 2019.
Charlie’s Angels Reboot Movie in the Works
Before becoming a writer with The Proposal, Chiarelli worked as a producer, even using a pseudonym for that film. He’s also contributed to popular movies like Crazy Rich Asians, Now You See Me 2, and the animated film GOAT.
This new film seems like a fresh start for Charlie’s Angels rather than a continuation of the early 2000s movies or a cast reunion. However, Lucy Liu has mentioned she’d be open to revisiting the franchise before its 25th anniversary in 2025. She admitted she usually doesn’t find out about potential projects until they’re already in the works, and while she wouldn’t rule anything out, she’d be surprised by any developments. She says you can never predict what will happen until it does.
I still love that movie, even after all these years! I remember when I heard Liu talk about it, she described it perfectly. She said being part of a film with three strong, funny women who weren’t afraid to just be themselves and have a good time was amazing. It wasn’t meant to be super deep or serious, just a fun, empowering experience.
The recent comments offered a more hopeful outlook than Liu’s earlier views on the matter. Previously, he had expressed doubt, saying, “I really don’t see how it can work. It’s gone through so many changes, even after the initial attempts… It’s a bit odd to even consider it, given how much things have changed since then.”
You know, looking back, it feels like things were so different then. Even when I was doing Ally McBeal, it was pretty groundbreaking to have a female lead portrayed like that. I’m not really one to analyze why things change – I just enjoy the experiences I have and then focus on what’s next. I don’t spend much time looking back, honestly. And a third Charlie’s Angels movie? Yeah, I’d be genuinely surprised if that ever came together.
