A recent and unexpected reunion is driving a show to the top of the premium video-on-demand rankings, even surpassing the latest installment in a popular, ongoing series.
According to FlixPatrol, the classic series Charlie’s Angels is now fourth most popular on the Apple TV Store in the US. Although Firefly remains at the top, Charlie’s Angels quickly climbed the charts – starting at number eleven on April 9th – and has already passed shows like Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage and Mad Men to reach the number four spot.
It’s no surprise the crime drama is popular again. Stars Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd recently came together to celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary. They reunited on April 6th at PaleyFest, where they shared memories of the series and their long-lasting friendship.
What Is Charlie’s Angels All About?
As a critic, I have to say, ‘Charlie’s Angels,’ created by Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts, really knew how to grab your attention. It introduced us to a fantastic trio – Sabrina Duncan, played by Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith as Kelly Garrett, and the unforgettable Jill Munroe, brought to life by Farrah Fawcett. The premise was clever: these women were top graduates from the police academy, but instead of getting the roles they deserved within the LAPD, they were recruited by the mysterious Charles Townsend to work as private investigators. It was a fresh and exciting take on the detective genre.
Despite mixed reactions from critics, Charlie’s Angels became a major pop culture icon in the 1970s and 80s, earning many award nominations and attracting a huge audience. It has remained popular and has been reimagined in different ways ever since.
The first Charlie’s Angels movie hit theaters in 2000, starring Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore as the new Angels. It was a huge success at the box office, leading to a sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, in 2003. The franchise was rebooted in 2019 with Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska, and Naomi Scott, but this version didn’t achieve the same popularity as the original films.
What’s Next for the Charlie’s Angels Franchise?
After a disappointing movie in 2019 and a failed TV show in 2011, fans have been hoping for a strong revival of Charlie’s Angels. Although the original cast recently celebrated the show’s 50th anniversary, a new series doesn’t seem likely in the near future, despite plans for another film.
News surfaced in February about a new Charlie’s Angels movie. Peter Chiarelli, the screenwriter behind Crazy Rich Asians and The Proposal (starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds), is writing the script. As of now, Sony hasn’t announced a director or any potential cast members for the film.
Charlie’s Angels is currently available via PVOD on the Apple TV Store.
