Fans recently enjoyed seeing Mario and Luigi’s adventures in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Now, this week brings The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, where the brothers head out on a journey through space. However, one actor from the film would love to see a smaller, more focused story featuring their character.
Charlie Day, who voices Luigi, recently shared that he’s eager to see a movie based on the Luigi’s Mansion game get made.
Not Quite Horror—But Close
While discussing the new Super Mario Bros. movie, Day expressed his enthusiasm for a Luigi’s Mansion adaptation, calling it a really enjoyable game. He suggested the tone didn’t need to be overly frightening, but could benefit from some well-placed jump scares to add to the fun, without turning it into a horror film for children.

It was so fun watching Keegan-Michael Key and Anya Taylor-Joy together! They were playfully joking about how everyone loves a good jump scare, and Anya had me cracking up when she added, “Especially three-year-olds!” It was such a lighthearted moment.
“It really could be a fantastic movie,” Day said. However, he admitted the choice isn’t up to him. “I’m not in charge of movie studios—and honestly, I wouldn’t know where to begin!”
If Nintendo and Illumination, the creators of the Mario Bros. movies, decide to make another film, they’ll likely start with an existing group of fans already excited for it.
From Tech Demo to Fan Favorite
The Luigi’s Mansion games are unique because they star Luigi, unlike most Nintendo games which focus on his brother, Mario. The first game started as a way to show off the Nintendo GameCube’s capabilities. It grew into a full game and became very popular, selling millions of copies. Although some players thought it was a bit short at first, it gained a dedicated fanbase over time, leading to sequels, updated versions, and new games on various consoles.

Players take on the role of a nervous plumber who investigates spooky places. His main tools are a special vacuum cleaner called the Poltergust—used to capture ghosts—and a flashlight. The game focuses on solving puzzles, with exciting ghost battles happening now and then.
The show’s success is even acknowledged in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. When Luigi finds himself in the Darklands, he holds a flashlight and hums the well-known theme song—a direct reference for fans. Charlie Day, who voices Luigi, also playfully imitates Luigi’s anxious way of speaking from Luigi’s Mansion when he calls for Mario.
Sharp-eyed fans can spot even more Luigi’s Mansion Easter eggs throughout the film.
Charlie Day Is All In
Creating a movie storyline for Luigi’s Mansion will be challenging. However, with the huge success of the Mario movies, the direction Nintendo and Illumination should take is obvious. It seems likely they’ll continue making sequels—and possibly explore other related stories—to capitalize on this momentum.

Charlie Day seems eager about the possibility of a Luigi-focused project. He acknowledged it would be a challenge, playfully comparing it to Luigi’s usual anxiousness, but confirmed he’d participate if given the chance. If the project happens, Luigi could finally get his own moment in the spotlight, stepping out from behind his brother Mario.
