Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is making waves after receiving a record-breaking 12 nominations at The Game Awards – more than any other game has ever received! It’s a strong contender for Game of the Year, Best Narrative, and numerous other top awards. The talented voice actors are also being recognized, with Ben Starr nominated for his performance as Verso and Charlie Cox for his portrayal of Gustave – though Cox jokingly admits he barely remembers recording his lines.
Charlie Cox nominated for a game he can’t recall
Charlie Cox is a British actor known for roles in shows like Boardwalk Empire, where he played Owen Sleater (it’s a great show if you haven’t seen it!). He also had a part in The Theory of Everything as Jonathan Hellyer Jones, but he’s become most popular for playing Matt Murdock, also known as Daredevil.
At a GalaxyCon New Orleans Q&A in July 2025, a fan asked Charlie if he thought his character, Matt Murdock, could be friends with a character named Esquie. Charlie was initially confused, as he didn’t recognize the name or the show it was from. The fan clarified that Esquie is from Expedition 33, but Charlie struggled to remember if that was the correct title, or if it was actually called Clair Obscur.

He explained that he only spent about four hours recording his lines for Gustave – which makes sense considering how little his character was in the script, and honestly, I’m still reeling from that! He also admitted he’s not really a gamer, so he wasn’t very familiar with the project itself. He did praise the game’s amazing graphics, and playfully commented on how far gaming has come since Mario 64, which he said was the last video game he played. That comment really summed things up for me. Honestly, this interview made me like him even more.
Here’s the GalaxyCon video, the Expedition 33 question segment starts at 16:19.
Charlie keeps getting asked about the game, but it’s clear he doesn’t really know much about it. While I think Erika Ishii deserves Best Performance for Ghost of Yotei, I’d love to see Charlie Cox win. Imagine him at The Game Awards, completely clueless about the category, who else is nominated, or past winners like Melina Juergens, Neil Newbon, or even Christopher Judge’s iconic speech. It would be incredibly funny.
