Chappell Roan recently drew a comparison between an upcoming pop album and the music from the video game RuneScape, instantly earning her recognition from gamers as a fellow enthusiast.
Even before this week, Roan had become a well-known figure in the gaming world. She reached a major milestone in February 2026 by headlining Fortnite Festival Season 13 and having two unique character skins added to the game. This was especially meaningful because she had previously requested a skin from Epic Games during a 2025 interview on BBC Radio 1.
Away from her public persona, she’s a dedicated Nintendo Switch gamer who enjoys games like The Legend of Zelda, Mario Kart, and Fortnite. She’s not a newcomer to gaming – she’s been playing for years, possibly even since the early days of online multiplayer games in the 2000s.
Chappell Roan shouts out RuneScape soundtrack
Roan recently shared her gaming background in an interview with Nylon, specifically mentioning the classic game Old School RuneScape. While discussing the debut album from Hemlocke Springs, she likened its musical style to the game’s atmosphere.

She described the album as evoking a specific feeling, comparing it to the soundscape of the early 2000s online game RuneScape. She explained it had a blend of video game-like sounds and medieval-style synthesizers.
She doubled down: “I’m a video game girl and I love synths and ’80s weird sh*t.”
She’s discussing the music from the original RuneScape, primarily composed by Ian Taylor. He created over 500 tracks with a unique sound that came not from extravagance, but from technical constraints. Back in the early 2000s, web browsers used MIDI files – essentially digital sheet music – and each computer interpreted them slightly differently, giving the music a distinctive quality.
I was so excited to see Old School RuneScape actually responded to me on X (formerly Twitter) after my interview came out! They thanked me for thinking of them and said they love my music – and even offered to send me and Hemlock Springs the MIDI files if we wanted them! It was such a cool moment as a fan.
Thanks for considering us, @chappellroan! We’re big fans of your music. If you or @hemlockesprings are ever interested in the MIDI files, just let us know. ❤️

Now that Roan is already a character in Fortnite and embraces her identity as a gamer, it’s possible we might see a new version of a popular song, cleverly incorporating ‘Sea Shanty 2’ into the middle of it.
