The new movie, starring Channing Tatum, has quickly become the most popular title on Paramount+. It’s based on the true story of Jeffrey Manchester, who famously escaped from prison and then robbed a Toys-R-Us store in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The new crime drama premiered on Paramount+ on December 9th. Within a day, it became the most popular show on the platform in both Canada and the United States, according to data from Flixpatrol. It also ranked seventh and tenth in Australia and Brazil, respectively, on Prime Video’s top 10 list.
The movie Roofman premiered on MGM+ in the United States, where it reached fourth place in popularity. It was behind the series Robin Hood, the thriller She Rides Shotgun, and the Tom Cruise film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning.
Manchester’s Story Also Struck A Chord With Tatum
Audiences aren’t the only fans of Roofman. Channing Tatum, who plays the lead role, also connected with the story. He recently shared that he felt a strong connection to his character, Manchester – whom he described as incredibly optimistic – especially through their shared experiences as fathers. Tatum said Manchester is one of the most positive people he’s ever known, and bringing him to life on screen was a meaningful experience.
When I read the script, it really hit me how, even though my life is so different from the character’s, the core motivation felt incredibly real. As a dad – I have a 12-year-old daughter, Everly – I instantly understood that protective instinct. I told Forbes a while back that if anything ever threatened her well-being, I’d do absolutely anything to make sure she had everything she needed. It’s just that primal, parental feeling, you know?
Tatum and Manchester developed a strong bond, especially after they talked about the challenges of raising families while facing difficult situations. Tatum shared, “I had many conversations with him, and it really affected me because I’ve been able to experience fatherhood in a way he hasn’t.” Manchester is currently serving his sentence at Central Prison in Raleigh, North Carolina.
As a single father, I really wanted to experience a traditional family life, but it just wasn’t meant to be, he explained. Because of that, I had to create my own way of being a dad and a parent, figuring things out as I went. This personal connection made the role of Roofman particularly meaningful for Tatum, who described the character’s vulnerability as a unique challenge when playing Manchester.
I went into the film knowing it would be told entirely from the father’s point of view, and honestly, it really hit home for me. I have a daughter myself, and I was missing her a lot while filming. I barely saw her the whole time – she only came to Charlotte for one weekend, and pulling her out of school just wasn’t really an option. I think I was really feeling that loneliness and separation as I played the character. It was intimidating working with such a talented director, but by the end of the shoot, I felt completely emotionally drained.
I was really impressed with Channing Tatum in this film! Everyone seemed to be talking about his performance, and it’s easy to see why. Critics and audiences alike really connected with what he brought to the role. One review I read pointed out it wasn’t a typical comedy, but a much more poignant story about a man longing for connection. The writer specifically said Tatum nailed the character’s sadness, and I completely agree – he portrayed that feeling of wanting to belong so beautifully.
Critics and audiences overwhelmingly agree that this funny crime show is excellent, giving it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers scoring it at 85%.
