The latest trailer for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ brings back characters from the X-Men, originally from Fox’s movies, and hints at a significant part for Channing Tatum as Gambit. Tatum was first cast as the card-throwing mutant in 2014, and a solo Gambit film was planned, but it faced numerous delays and was ultimately cancelled.
In 2024, Tatum was finally able to play Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine. Many fans loved his portrayal of the character, and he fought alongside Deadpool and Wolverine against Cassandra Nova. Luckily, a scene that didn’t make the final cut suggested he might return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as a portal opened, seemingly offering him a way out of the Void.
We still don’t know who created the portal, but Marvel has confirmed Channing Tatum will be in Doomsday. He’ll be playing a member of the X-Men, alongside some familiar faces from the original X-Men movies. While his involvement is great news, the preview hints that his version of Gambit might be different than expected.
Channing Tatum’s Gambit Must Have A More Serious Role In Avengers: Doomsday
Marvel is fully embracing the high stakes and danger of its upcoming stories. Doctor Doom will be a major challenge for many of the MCU’s heroes. The trailer for the new X-Men movie is particularly dark, but it also features a heartwarming reunion between Charles Xavier and Magneto, played by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.
The new trailer shows Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters looking deserted and in disrepair, with hallways shrouded in darkness and furniture overturned. We hear Magneto asking, “Who will you be when you close your eyes?” The trailer culminates in a powerful scene of James Marsden’s Cyclops firing a huge optic blast, surrounded by flames and what appear to be sentinels.
Fans are thrilled about the X-Men rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it seems unlikely we’ll see Channing Tatum’s version of Gambit in the upcoming team-up movie. His portrayal in Deadpool & Wolverine focused more on humor, relying heavily on his exaggerated and sometimes hard-to-understand Cajun accent for comedic effect.
The upcoming film, Doomsday, is noticeably more intense, which will require Gambit to be portrayed with greater seriousness. This is actually a good thing, as it gives Channing Tatum the opportunity to show a more developed and nuanced side of the character. While Gambit can still be funny, Doomsday will let audiences see a different, more complex facet of him than what was seen in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Channing Tatum Already Confirmed He’s Toning Down Gambit’s Cajun Accent
Channing Tatum’s thick Cajun accent in Deadpool & Wolverine provided a lot of funny scenes. It was sometimes difficult to understand, and Deadpool jokingly asked if Tatum had been taking dialect coaching from the Minions, comparing his speech to the movie Sling Blade. Tatum later told Access Hollywood that he often meant for it to be that way.
Ryan Reynolds would often tell me he didn’t want to hear any details about what I was doing, so I’d really exaggerate everything. But sometimes he’d ask me to explain things clearly so he could understand.
Though his strong accent worked well when we first met the character, it wouldn’t quite suit the more serious tone of the upcoming Doomsday scenes. In a recent Variety interview, the actor playing Roofman explained he’s softening Gambit’s accent, but still plans to include some humor.
I’m not aiming for an over-the-top, exaggerated style. The directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, want humor, but they don’t want to make it as wild as ‘Deadpool.’ They’re focusing on maintaining dramatic tension and keeping the story focused. When Gambit gets serious – when he stops being playful – the stakes become real.
The Russo Brothers Know How To Utilize Comedic Characters In Darker Stories
The Russo brothers started their careers directing comedies, including episodes of shows like Arrested Development and Community. But when they joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, they shifted gears, creating a darker, more realistic spy thriller instead of a typical lighthearted superhero movie.
The filmmakers successfully carried that same serious and impactful style into Captain America: Civil War, which showed a major conflict between the MCU’s heroes. Avengers: Infinity War was the darkest and most intense MCU film to date, ending with a shocking twist that left viewers stunned. The Avengers finally triumphed over Thanos in Endgame.
Although these movies have a more serious tone than other Marvel films, the Russo brothers successfully balanced dramatic moments with humor. Even characters known for being funny, like Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy, provided comic relief without undermining the more intense scenes.
Thor’s character has changed over time, starting as a serious figure and then becoming more comedic in Thor: Ragnarok. The Russo Brothers successfully combined both of these sides of his personality in Infinity War, and the trailer for Doomsday hints that he’ll return to being more serious after Thor: Love and Thunder.
Okay, so “Avengers: Doomsday” is shaping up to be a pretty intense film, and that means Channing Tatum’s Gambit is going to have to fit that mood. Luckily, the Russo brothers – the directors – have a knack for balancing humor with serious storytelling, as we’ve seen in their previous work. I’m really hoping they can bring that same skill to Gambit and give us some truly memorable scenes.
