In everyday language, we’ve all found ourselves in situations where conversations become so complex that it feels like we’re lost in translation. On the Gabbing with Gib podcast, Real Housewives of Dubai star Chanel Ayan admitted she was perplexed when participating in Traitors, as she didn’t recognize the non-Bravolebrities and questioned their reasons for discussing difficult times. “I didn’t know the other participants because they kept saying, ‘I’m a survivor, I’m a survivor…’ I thought they had endured hardships similar to mine: female genital mutilation, malaria, typhoid, ebola, drought, and more,” she explained. “So I asked, ‘What have you all survived?’ Then [Jeremy] said, ‘I lost 40 lbs.’ And I was puzzled.” Indeed, it seems she had a valid point; contestants on competition shows often share traumatic experiences to justify their need for the prize money. Perhaps they were doing the same on Traitors (except maybe singing Destiny’s Child). Ayan also considers herself a survivor of the trauma she faced as a child, so it’s understandable that she misunderstood how others were using the term. “I still didn’t grasp what they meant. I left and felt like I had died, and it was then that I realized there’s a show called Survivor.
