The new movie, Reze Arc, has launched to great excitement in North America. Early screenings have earned it a first score on Rotten Tomatoes. This film continues the story of Denji from the Chainsaw Man anime, based on the Bomb Devil Arc from the original manga.
The movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc premiered in the U.S. on October 22nd and has received overwhelmingly positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 100% score from critics based on 14 reviews, and a 99% audience score, suggesting it’s a hit with viewers before its official release in the U.S. and Canada on October 24th. Critics are especially impressed with the film’s exciting action, stunning animation, and compelling story, noting its unique combination of emotional moments and intense, often shocking, action.
Chainsaw Man Movie Debuts in North America With Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score
The new Reze Arc movie has received a perfect score from critics, exceeding the initial rating of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle. While Demon Slayer’s score has since improved to 98% based on 59 reviews, Reze Arc is the second film from creator Tatsuki Fujimoto to earn a perfect 100% rating, following the 2024 film Look Back.
The film is receiving strong praise in Western markets after becoming a major hit in Japan. Since its release there on September 19th, Reze Arc has earned excellent reviews and stayed at number one in the box office for five weeks straight. It has sold over 4.26 million tickets in Japan, bringing in about 6.514 billion yen (approximately US$42.7 million). Worldwide, the film has already earned an estimated US$68.3 million. This success is surprising, as the distributor, TOHO, originally predicted a total earning of 5 billion yen. The film has already far exceeded that expectation, easily covering its break-even point of 2.5 billion yen.
MAPPA is still handling the animation for the movie, but Tatsuya Yoshihara is now directing, replacing Ryu Nakayama who directed the first season. The first season was praised for its realistic, movie-like style, though some Japanese fans weren’t thrilled with it. Yoshihara recently mentioned he’s aiming to make the movie closer in tone and style to Fujimoto’s original manga.
Ahead of the movie launch, Crunchyroll temporarily released the complete first season of the Chainsaw Man anime on their official YouTube channel starting October 11th.
