This week is packed for the esteemed baseball player CC Sabathia, as GTG Studios unveiled their newest production – a film titled “Vallejo,” which draws inspiration from Sabathia’s life. This project is a collaborative effort between GTG Studios, Creative Control, and Grapefruit Media.
The movie follows the extraordinary tale of the 1989 North Vallejo Little League All-Stars, who faced the struggles of growing up in a deteriorating city. At its core, this film narrates the uplifting true account of Sabathia, a World Series champion and future New York Yankees legend, before his meteoric rise to stardom in Major League Baseball. Rapper and native of Vallejo, LaRussell, is set to take on the lead role.
As I pen down my thoughts, I find myself reflecting on the recent news that Mariano Rivera’s longtime teammate, CC Sabathia, has been inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In his inaugural year on the ballot, he garnered an impressive 86.8% of the vote, a testament to his unparalleled skills and impact on the game.
For Sabathia, sports offered an escape from reality in Vallejo; a means to extend our evenings beyond the city lights and steer clear of the urban jungle,” suggests a rephrased version. “Before I was crowned a World Series champion, I was simply another youth grappling with survival in Vallejo. The story of ‘Vallejo’ is about me and my peers discovering our identities, understanding the world we lived in, and navigating away from the perilous path.
In the city of Vallejo, California during the late 1980s, the movie portrays a bleak image of a town spiraling downward. The narrative focuses on a city grappling with a severe economic collapse, escalating crime rates, and deep-seated societal issues. However, amidst these hardships, the film highlights the resilience of young baseball players who find comfort and fortitude on the field. Viewed through the eyes of a teenage Sabathia, the movie delves into life-altering friendships, the power of brotherhood, and the unyielding quest for hope amidst adversity.
Under the guidance of Samir Hernandez, the renowned figure behind productions like “38 at the Garden” and “Two Distant Strangers,” GTG Studios has brought on board the dynamic duo Coodie and Chike from Creative Control (known for “jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy”) to helm their upcoming film.
According to Coodie and Chike, ‘Vallejo’ aims to portray life in its authentic form – unpolished, genuine, and truthful. This initiative represents a significant milestone for us as we venture into scripted narratives. We are consistently attracted to concepts that evoke empathy, as it is the common thread that binds us all. Raised in areas similar to Vallejo, Chicago, or New Orleans, our perspective on the world comes from children merely trying to make sense of their environment – gritty but brimming with compassion and optimism.
The Academy Award-winning screenwriter Travon Free, who is also a co-founder of The Unreasnble, along with up-and-coming writer Jacory Gums from Vallejo, will pen the script.
Originating from Compton, I understand what it means to reside in a town with a profound legacy that consistently outperforms expectations. In the same vein, Vallejo stands tall within the Bay Area. This small yet powerful city is brimming with musical and athletic prowess that arises against all odds. I’m thrilled to be part of the team that aims to portray the indomitable spirit of this ‘underdog by the bay’ on the silver screen.
The movie is set to be jointly produced by GTG Studios along with CC, as well as Grapefruit Media owned by Amber Sabathia and Creative Control, with the inclusion of The Unreasnable.
Executive producer and founder of GTG Studios, Hernandez, notes that ‘Vallejo’ isn’t just a baseball tale; it’s a story that showcases resilience, unity, and the pursuit of hope amidst hardship. CC’s journey mirrors the resilience shown by many young individuals who come from difficult backgrounds, and we are privileged to share this moving account on screen.
